Unit purpose
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise situations where people may be in imminent crisis, and then to work
collaboratively to minimise any safety concerns and make plans to access required support services. This unit applies to any community services worker involved in crisis intervention. Management of the crisis may involve face-to-face, telephone or remote contact with persons involved.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Assessment event 1: Written task - Crisis intervention scenarios
This event requires you to submit a written response to two (2) crisis intervention scenarios to demonstrate your ability to identify and address signs of crisis situations and provide support to people that may be in an emerging crisis situation.
You must submit the following:
- Responses to two (2) crisis intervention scenarios This item must address the marking criteria as listed below.

- To complete this assessment event you may use the appropriate forms for your State or Territory.
You must meet the marking criteria below in order to successfully complete this assessment event. | |
1. Responses to two (2) crisis intervention scenarios |
Respond correctly to each of the questions related to the crisis intervention scenarios provided. Your responses must: 1. Be presented in the crisis intervention scenarios CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations. 2. Be answered correctly. 3. Provide details addressing all parts of each question with examples as appropriate. 4. Use clear and concise language to ensure the intended meaning is understood. 5. Provide references to the source of information, as relevant. |
Assessment event 2: Portfolio - Crisis intervention assessment
This event requires you to submit a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your ability to assess, identify and address crisis situations and provide support to people that may be in an emerging crisis situation while minimising the risks to yourself.
The assessment for this event will be based on the following crisis intervention role play.
Your portfolio of evidence must include the following items:
- Crisis intervention role play
- Intake assessment
- Risk assessment documentation
- Referral actions
- Safe work practices
These items must address the marking criteria as listed below.
Note:
- The role play item will be undertaken with your facilitator during an online session. You will need speakers, a microphone and computer screen to see your facilitator to undertake the role play.
- Prior to completing this task:
- contact your facilitator to arrange a date and time for the role play to take place.
- follow these instructions to set up and participate in the role play.

You must meet the marking criteria below in order to successfully complete this assessment event. | |
1. Crisis intervention role play |
Based on the crisis intervention role play participate in the role play with your facilitator. During the role play you must demonstrate the following: 1. Applying appropriate legal and ethical considerations in relation to: o Duty of care o Privacy, confidentiality and disclosure o Work role boundaries o Responsibilities and limitations o Codes of practice. 2. Responding to signs indicating the presence of safety issues. 3. Using appropriate questioning techniques to establish safety issues. 4. Taking immediate action in accordance with organisational procedures. |
2. Intake assessment |
Completed and submit an Intake Assessment Form for the crisis intervention role play in task 1 above. Your Intake Assessment form must: 1. Be completed using Indigo's Intake Assessment Form. 2. Accurately record: o signs and indicators of the service user that suggest there may be safety issues present. o actions agreed upon to reduce immediate danger and risks to others o agreed first steps for the service user to access and use information supports and professional help. |
3. Risk assessment documentation |
Identify, complete and submit any/all necessary risk assessment documentation/reports for the crisis intervention role play in task 1. Your risk assessment document/report(s) must: 1. Be for appropriate to the service user's situation. 2. Be completed using the appropriate forms according to Indigo's policies and procedures. 3. Accurately record the service user's situation. |
4. Referral actions |
Identify and complete any/all necessary referrals to |
professionals identified from the crisis intervention role play in task 1 above. Your referral(s) must: 1. Be completed using the appropriate forms according to Indigo's policies and procedures. 2. Be to appropriate professionals for the service user's situation. | |
5. Safe work practices |
Create and submit a word processed document that describes the steps you will take to ensure your self-care following the risks that arose during the crisis intervention role play in task 1. Specifically: 1. Identify the risks to yourself that were present during the crisis intervention role play. 2. Describe how you will minimise these risks through the use of: o supervision o debriefing |
