17. Case Study 1
Read the following case study and answer the questions.
Amanda lives in a community house with two other young adults. Amanda and her housemates are supported by a local accommodation support service. She recently completed her schooling at a local special school and is currently attending a day activity program for people with an intellectual disability. Amanda and her family are not satisfied with this arrangement. They have discussed options with Amanda’s key worker and other house staff about her next steps and the direction that her life might take.

18. Case Study2
Read the following case study and answer the questions.
Jake, a 40 year old man is a paraplegic following a car accident, has recently moved into a group home because his care needs have increased to a point where Jake was feeling too much of a burden for his ageing parents. He is quite close with his parents. Jake was a builder before the accident, and he was a keen fisherman on weekends, and he has a strong interest in ‘Aussie Rules’.
Jake is an independent, capable person with a positive attitude to life. He is now confined to a wheelchair during the day and he needs some assistance with personal care and cooking, but he can still dress himself and feed himself.
You have been assigned as his support worker and your role is to assist Jake engage more in his local community and participate in some of the things he used to enjoy.

You have now been assisting and supporting Jake and his parents for 6 months. A holiday opportunity has arisen for Jake to go on a fishing camp for 4 days with 3 other clients at the accommodation at a beachside setting.
You have been assigned as a support worker for this trip along with 2 other workers.
- What do you think are some physical barriers that might affect Jake in participating in fishing at the beach/jetty? What are some of your solutions, please explain.
- Before travelling for this trip what are some transport recommendations you will need to consider for this group of clients, support workers and Jake?
- When planning this trip what are some possible strategies that may require a review and report to the supervisor? (List 4 answers)
20. Case Study 4
Read the following case study and answer the questions.
Tom is a 38 year old man with black hair and blue eyes. He comes from a large family with 4 brothers and 3 sisters. He enjoys being around animals and has had several pets growing up. Tom’s IQ is over 70. Tom has a diagnosis of Epilepsy and has seizures twice a day. When he has seizures, he blacks out for about 5-10 minutes and doesn’t remember anything that happened and is forgetful for a while. Tom dreams of living in an apartment and working at a job where he can be with animals.
Sarah works at a developmental training program. She enjoys working there, and the staff all appreciate her sense of humour and that she lights up the building when she arrives in the morning. Sarah has a visual impairment and uses a wheelchair. She has worked on a variety of contracts but her dream is to work out in the community with a small group that goes out daily to clean offices.
Rich is a lively 8 year old with freckles and short blond hair. Rich has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Rich’s likes include water, swimming, play-doh, Legos, and art; he does not like sudden changes in his schedule, loud noises, trucks, or touching coins. Rich prefers to wear shorts with elastic at the waist and short sleeve shirts without collars or buttons. Rich lives in an area that receives a lot of snow during the winter, yet he does not want to miss any school due to the weather.
Angela is a shy woman who enjoys watching television, listening to her CD’s, and bowling. She dreams of having a boyfriend and going horseback riding. Angela recently moved into a group home after living with her family. Her family is very supportive and enjoys having contact with her. English is Angela’s second language; her family speaks Spanish. None of the other people living in the group home speak Spanish and only two staff speak Spanish.

21. Case Study 4
Read the following case study and answer the questions.
Jim is a 22 year old man who recently suffered a spinal cord injury (SCI) while playing rugby for his local club. Jim is unable to walk and uses a wheelchair for mobility. He still has full use of his hands and arms.
At the time of his accident, Jim was studying Computer Engineering with one year of his degree to go. He had to withdraw from his course at the time but would like to return to university to complete his course when the new academic year commences.
To save money Jim was living with his parents while he was studying and has continued to live with them. They have had to make minor adjustments to the house to enable Jim to move about independently. Jim would like to continue living with his parents until he becomes more financially independent once he starts working after completing his degree.
Since his accident Jim has had little to do with the local rugby club. In the early stages some of his team mates would visit him and ask him to join them at the club but Jim found this too difficult as he would be envious of his able-bodies friends.
However, he has begun to feel more confident and accepting with his situation and has been thinking that he would like to become involved in a sporting setting again. Prior to his accident Jim was very active and also enjoyed running, golf and tennis. Since the accident and up until this point Jim has embraced the physical challenge of rehabilitation and has thought that maybe he could still take part in sporting activities but is unsure of what he can do and what organisations he could join.
Up until now Jim has always been transported either by a specifically designed taxi, the rehab centre’s van or his parents. He has not tried to take public transport even though he lives on a main bus route. However he does wheel himself down to the corner shop when necessary and thinks that he could be ready to try to take a bus as he will have to do this when he returns to university.
