Developmental Theories Erik Erikson
Erik Erikson emphasised the role of culture and society. According to Erikson, the ego develops as it successfully resolves crises that are distinctly social in nature. These involve developing trust in others, healthy identity formation, and helping the next generation prepare for the future.
Erikson developed a lifespan model of psychosocial development. Erikson suggests that there is still plenty of room for continued growth and development throughout one’s life. Erikson put a great deal of emphasis on the adolescent period, feeling it was a crucial stage for developing a person’s identity. Erikson maintained the epigenetic principle, that is, that personality develops in a
predetermined order, and builds upon each previous stage. When an individual successfully transitions through the psychosocial stages, Erikson believes that the individual becomes high functioning, autonomous and is able to integrate a set of life skills and abilities successfully. Each stage must be achieved in order for the individual to gain the optimal outcome and to avoid psychological issues.
Failure to successfully complete a stage can result in a reduced ability to complete further stages and therefore a more unhealthy personality and sense of self. These stages, however, can be resolved successfully at a later time.

Client Presentation
The study focused on Alice Johnson and her Son James. Alice is an 18 years old teenager who is a drug abuser as well. She is a mother of James, a one year old baby. Alice has gone through several issues that has negatively affected her development. James cannot get the motherly loves he deserves from her disturbed mother hence his normal development is equally affected.
Assessment of Client Developmental Functioning (indicators, causes)
The current issues that can be ob
served from Alice and James development as human beings can be categorized into physical, cognitive, psychological and emotional, sexual and social. Alice is addicted to drug abuse which is likely to have a long-term health complication. She is at risk of developing chronic illness and diseases. Cognitively, she lacks education hence minimal numerical and literacy skills. Alice cannot complete job application forms leave alone getting employment to support her son. Alice is suffers from depression which has affected her development psychologically and emotionally. She has no close family to support her and her child. Her mother died when she was 8 years which has contributed to emotional issues facing her in the adolescent stage. Her depression is basically as a result of low self-esteem, lack of emotional awareness, depreciation of self-efficacy and coping. Living in the street, Alice started to engage in sexual activities at the age of 14 years leading to pregnancy at the age of 16 years.
As a one year old baby, James ought to be experiencing rapid changes in his development. Physically, he would be gaining height and weight. Actually, he has to be taking his first steps. The can learn about life concepts such as socialization, language skills and express his emotions by playing with her mother. However, James’ development has been impinged by Alice’s current issues such as depression, substance abuse, lack of basic education, and isolation. Alice lacks affection for her child considering her situation.
Consultation Plan
According to Theorist Erik Erikson, there are 8 stages in a human’s life span. James is in the first stage which is characterized with developing sense of trust. Trust is developed from mother’s care, affection, and love. Since he cannot get all these from his mother, James will develop mistrust. Conversely, Alice is in the Adolescent stage of life stage development. The stage is associated with developing social relationship and self-esteem. Alice is facing numerous issues as far as this stage is concerned.
To get more information on the issues facing Alice and James, I have a couple of questions for the mother. For example, I would like to know what Alice do when she feel depressed. If she have any problem as well as if she has joined any social help group. I would also like to know what she does to appreciate the presence of James. If Alice affirms that she has some friends and has joined a social group, I would approach one of her friends and coordinator at the social group to gather more information on Alice and James.
Referral Process & Services
From the questions, I would understand the current social status of Alice and James. I would, in return, use the information to help Alice see their level of social development and what she really needs to do. The assessment would also help us to develop a plan to revive Alice’s level of social participation. If Alice has not joined any social help group, I would refer to one group that will help her out. I would do a follow-up with her case on a weekly basis to establish if there exists any positive changes in her behavior. I would also consult with the coordinator at the social group to establish the most effective ways to help Alice regain her self-esteem and give her son the motherly love he lacks currently.
Mandated Reporting Requirements
The behavioral changes witnessed in Alice and James will be reported and recorded on a weekly basis. The requirements and recording of their development status will be classified in five categories namely; a) Psychological and emotional, b) social, c) physical, d) social development, and e) cognitive changes.
6. Values and Attitudes
The individual rights and privacy of Alice and James will be represented. I have to make sure that a friendly atmosphere has been created to enable a good atmosphere for the purpose of the atmosphere. For the success of the exercise, utmost good faith, respect, transparency must be observed at all time.
Standards, policies, and procedures
The exercise should be conducted as par the standards, policies, and procedures established by the Department of Communities, Child Safety, and Disability Services. The guideline is used to ensure transparency, responsiveness, and consistency to people like Alice who seek assistance.
