ARTS 7001 Final Project Details - Technology of Google Duplex
At the start of the semester, we completed a group exercise wherein we identified and tried to articulate “human values”. In trying to make this abstract idea more concrete, we generated a list of the following:
- Justice
- Connection (family, friends, social relationships)
- Security (health, safety)
- Superiority / Exceptionalism (belief in being “better” or “the best”)
- Opportunity (a chance to become all things listed above!)
- Freedom (some mentioned: thinking, speech, religion)
For our final project, each member of the class will research a technology they find directly related to what we collectively identified as basic human needs or "values", represented in the list above. After doing some research/thinking and coming up with an example, If you record a video presentation, you can attach the email it to me directly.
As an example, last semester, a student watching a show called “America’s Greatest Makers” became interested in a pitch for a wearable device called Venn. From its makers:
“Venn is a wearable bracelet that lets you subtly reach your favourite person when they’re not by your side. Currently in beta, Venn can transmit warmth, a light squeeze or a gentle vibration – to let your significant other know you’re thinking of them.”

The STS 310 student shared some of the information about Venn with us, and clearly explained how he found the device to relate to a value we’d collectively come up with (last year, it was “companionship”). In addition, he did some basic research on the idea of companionship as fundamental to human health and society, citing these sources as well.

Technology is very much needed for the survival of human lives. It has become the basic need of everyday life. In the recent times, human beings have become greatly dependent on technological needs (Vicente 2013). Google Duplex is one of the latest innovations in this era, which has transformed the lives of humans. The technology has being the most innovative feature of the new Google Assistant. It has a completely automated built system that would sound calls on the behalf of the users. They would have a completely natural sounding voice similar to that of humans. The Google Assistant is one such feature, which has a powerful feature of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has the capability to act according to the voice commands of the users (Russell and Norvig 2016).

A Brief Introduction to Google Duplex
The Google Duplex, which is an extended feature version of Google Assistant was initially launched by the Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai. This technology showcases the new feature of
the Google Assistant and was launched during the annual event of Google I/O, which had taken placed in May.
The feature of Google Duplex is mainly designed in order to help people in order to have a natural form of conversion with the help of computers. The primary aim of the technology is to perform real-life tasks with the help of the smartphone (Van Deursen et al. 2015). The virtual assistant of Google would sound perfectly just as a human. The system makes use of deep neural networks and vast sets of data. Hence, the assistant would be able to use expressions such as “hmm” and “uh” within the proper places.
According to the CEO of Google, it was confirmed that the technology behind Google Duplex would be able to represent the several large investments that was made by Google over the recent years. This advancements within the technology was especially made within the areas of text-to-text conversion of speech and natural language processing (Zhong et al. 2014).
Tasks Performed by Google Duplex
The conversion of natural language with the help of computers was a dream in the previous times. This was made possible with the help of Google Assistant and it was further enhanced with the help of Google Duplex (Jiang et al. 2015). The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a major fact with the help of Duplex that is mainly responsible for accomplishing the real-world tasks by using the smartphone. The research within this technology and the major form of evolution within the processing of natural language, deep learning and machine learning has led to the success factor of Google Duplex. These technologies have also impacted other kinds of applications such as Google Voice Search. The use of Google Duplex would be able to provide justice to the decisions taken by people during various kinds of tasks of regular usage.
The real-world tasks that are accomplished by Google Duplex would change the future of AI and the rapid use of the voice search facility by the users. Google Duplex is able to conduct the processing of natural language in a smooth and efficient way. There are several kind of tasks such as scheduling of the appointments, getting information of products, booking of several kind of services and many other form of specific tasks. In order to enhance the technology within the AI usage, Google has hence decided to enhance the experience of conversation in a comfortable fashion and also in a natural manner. This technology would be of a great help to people in order to speak in a normal manner without the purpose of adjusting within the machine in order to perform real-time tasks (Kiseleva et al. 2016). Google Duplex also helps in extending connections with family and friends by building a strong social relationship with people. This is made possible with the immense advanced AI technologies within the system. The health and safety of each member of a family could also be taken care of by Duplex. It could assist in suggesting the users to the best doctors and medical centre. This provides a high level of security within the life of the people.
The main things of attraction within the use of the technology of Google Duplex would not be able to perform general conversations. This technology is restrained to some closed domains. The technology performs natural form of conversations after the proper form of training in some specific domains (Milhorat et al. 2014).

The new technology of Duplex is a natural form of technology that would have provide a good experience for various businesses and users with the service. In practical means, it is a bit difficult for the understanding of natural form of language (Dale 2016). The new form of the model of Google Duplex is a tricky model that would require very fast processing based on providing with real-time responses. Google Duplex provides the freedom of speech without the biasness of language of the people. The AI behind Duplex is able to think beyond the thinking of the people and would provide immense suggestions before the users. Google Duplex provides various options of languages before the people for their support and convenience.

Duplex makes use of the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) in order to cope with the challenges that are posed before it. Customers would be able to call businesses in order to inquire for information regarding the company, which might not be available on the internet. The Google Duplex also provides the facility of high availability for their users in making their tasks in an easy process (Beranek 2013). The services provided by Google Duplex provides immense opportunities before the users. The underlying AI is so advanced that they provide a list of suggestions and recommendations before the users. The users would just have to command and choose their services with the help of their voice.
Conclusion
Based on the understanding of the discussion, it could be concluded that the use of Google Duplex would be of great use for establishing a strong and healthy relation of humans with technology. There is a huge opportunity of AI in the recent times and thus Duplex would be very much beneficial for enhancing the quality of AI. Google has helped in the creation of a new era for the interaction of humans with machines with their new product. Human dependency on bots has reduced the interaction capacity of humans. Duplex would be helpful in dealing with this problem by reacting according to the needs of the user without the direct need of human voice.
Recommendation
Based on the conclusion from the above discussion, it would be highly recommended that though Google Duplex is advancing at a very high pace, hence they should also be taking the matter of privacy in deep concern. Since the Google Assistant has the rights to access the entire phone hence the level of security within those devices should be increased at a higher level (Easwara Moorthy and Vu 2015). Duplex could also be a huge support for business for their growth as businessmen would be highly rely on this technology in order to maintain their daily records of their business. Duplex could play a major role within the tourism industry by helping the tourists to discover new places and thus gain a wonderful experience of their journey.
