AED5023 | E-Learning | Online Learning over Traditional Learning
1. Consider the following question clusters:
- Were you surprised by the general finding that online/blended learning yields learning outcomes that were as good as or better than traditional face-to-face learning outcomes? If so, in what way? What is your reaction to those findings in general? What are your assumptions about the quality of online learning?
- What positive or negative associations might you have about the potential quality of online learning, its value, its impact on your learners? Do you think that this form of learning might have a detrimental effect in some way, or in some cases? Which ones? For whom, and in which circumstances?
- What questions are you left with at this point in the course?
2. Capture your responses to at least a few of the above questions. You can focus on whichever questions seem most relevant or resonant. Compose an inital post (one that starts a discussion) based on your responses, and post it to the forum (by starting a new discussion) by Thursday, 2 August at 11:55pm.
3. Make at least at least two supportive responses to other students. A good “supportive response” will be one in which you may ask probing questions, offer encouragement and support to group members, or express agreement or disagreement to particular posts. You should also give specific examples or reasons for your posts (e.g. not just “I agree absolutely with this post,” but “I agree with this post because I have experienced this kind of treatment in secondary school myself, and I have seen how quick intervention by the teacher may prevent ongoing harassment.” Although these posts might be shorter than the initial post, they should nevertheless contribute in a meaningful way to the overall discussion.

The world is quickly becoming a digitalised world. It would only make sense for education to take the same pathway. I am sure we have all been exposed to a toddler or an infant who can use our phone better than we can; or shocked by show quickly they have learnt it’s main functions.
This is why I think it is important to create a blended learning environment for the K-12. It is all about balance.
I think online/digitalised learning creates a lot of opportunities, especially for those living in region or rural areas. But I am also aware of over-doing the digitialised education. The fear of an increase in obesity within our adolescents could quickly get out of control. With them spending more and more time around screens than doing physical acitivities.
It is important to note that the experiment states the blended learning has been more effective. A combination of online and face-to-face. It does not state that either one is better than the other.
Questions I have left unanswered are:
1. If they are changing the way student learn. Are they adapting tertiary education for our teachers to conside with the ‘blended learning’?
2. It great digitalising our education, but is anyone being educated in cyber security?
3. What detrimental effects is online learning going to have to students socially? (If there is any)

I was pleasantly surprised by the findings in that online learning is just as effective as face to face learning. I have done a fair amount of studies online through tafe and now with my current studies. I have always preferred online learning over face to face because it fits my lifestyle better, I work 50 hours a week and being able to study on my own terms makes it a lot easier, also I find it easier to concentrate while I’m comfortable in my own home plus I find it a lot less stressful. I have always found the quality of the learning material in my online studies has been great and I love the fact that people are able to learn just as well online as they would be able to face to face.
My only concern with online learning is with people losing their motivation or approaching their studies carelessly, yes, we have deadlines and due dates for our assignments in our online studies but we don’t have anyone there to push us or motivate us, I feel people could try and take advantage of studying online with no one there to watch you and help you the urge to just hop on to google and look up the correct answer to questions and get an easy pass is unfair.
To conclude I think online learning is fantastic and it makes learning more accessible and easier for some people who work or have very busy schedules or just live too far away, however I think exams for online students need to be done on campus.
Answer:
No, I was not surprised after going through the general findings regarding the importance of online or blended learning in comparison with the traditional form of learning. The reason behind the fact is that according to my knowledge I have found that with the advancement in technology there has been a drastic change occurred in the field of education where the traditional form of learning become less important for the students in comparison with the online or blended learning (Mazoue, 2014). It can be seen that online education helps in providing flexibility for the students which is not provided by the traditional form of learning. Using the online method of learning, the students can manage both their working schedule followed by the learning courses (Heap, 2017). Moreover, after the analysis of the findings, I have realized that studying through online mode allows the students to enhance their skills of time management followed by the upgrading of self-motivation. My assumptions regarding the quality of online learning are that this kind of leaning need to have certain sensible, practical, and effective educational structure in combination with the development of educational programs and courses. In the research, it has been found that the quality online education results in integrating research-oriented institutional practices which are going to be applied within the online environment. For all these reasons I personally think that it is necessary for introducing online learning for the K-12.
According to my own research I have found that there are several positive effects are present regarding the value of online learning for the students. Primarily, I have found that the online learning provides various kinds of higher education courses for the students which they can study from home itself and accordingly they will also be getting reputed degrees after the completion of those online courses (Arkorful & Abaidoo, 2015). The online learning courses are much affordable as compared to the face to face learning courses. Moreover, the most important benefit of online education is that this form of learning is totally based upon the learner and he or she do not have to wait for attending the lectures of the teacher. If any student misses out some lecture then in the online mode of education that student can again learn about that course whenever he or she requires (Nguyen, 2015). One of the major detrimental effects of online learning is poor communication as the students are not getting the opportunity to communicate with the teachers.
Questions that are not answered by me are:
- List the type of practices which are linked with the development of efficient online education.
- Is the online education courses can be hacked by the cybersecurity hackers?
- Is it possible to implement online instruction within the face-to-face mode of learning for enhancing the method of online education?

Dear Whyte,
Thank you very much for the post. Yes, I agree with you about the fact that with the advancement of technology we also need to enhance our method of learning and need to replace the traditional learning with the online learning. Yes, I have also noticed that online education is providing great support to the educational system of the rural areas.
Response 2
Dear Severinsen,
Thank you very much for the post. Yes, I agree with you about the fact that there is no teacher available in online learning who is going to instruct us for studying but on the other hand, this kind of online learning helps us to enhance our self-motivation and dedication towards study. We can learn more things apart from the courses in online education and this kind of education is best suitable for the students with busy working schedules.
