Introduction
The socialization of people is influenced by a number of factors. The family is a major element in the process of socialization. In modern times people are socialized through modern technologies such as social media, electronic media and print media. Groups play a cornerstone role in socializing people to different beliefs, attitudes, ideas, behaviour and even the way we think. Even though people are exposed through different for in the socialization process they are influenced by those who are in power to obey whatever they demand of them.
Primary group and secondary group and how they satisfy expressive needs and instrumental needs respectively
People engage one another in smaller primary groups to face to face for a longer period of time. They get to satisfy their expressive needs by interacting with others in the group where they share their feelings and opening up to one another about their problems. They get assistance through advice, guidance and counselling. A family is an efficient example of a primary group.
Secondary which are usually large members have impersonal relationships. They are normally brought together by tasks they are mutually involved in. for example a savings group where the instrumental needs are quenched.
Reference groups and their influence in the age of social media
A reference group has had a big influence on social media. For example, LinkedIn has influenced me so much through the inspirations I get through my connections. I get influence from people who act as my role models who I admire what they do in their daily lives.
Social media has led to emergency of in-groups and out-groups
Every single day social media connections for example Facebook pages have created boundaries among different categories of Facebook pages. Members belonging to a certain page tend to behave in a manner that isolates others who are not on that page. This has brought animosity, name-calling, ridicule and even physical assault. It has brought about stereotyping among and between users. Social media connections have influenced beliefs, values and even physical appearance which has varied impacts depending on how we look at them.
Leadership styles
Difference people lead differently applying different leadership styles. Leaders who use a democratic style of leadership use it because they want to be “a leader of the people”. This means that they value the input by the local people from the grassroots. Leaders who use an authoritative leadership style are compelled to use it where people are opposing good development ideas. Leaders become authoritative when they want to control all processes. Laisser faire is normally applicable where the leader wants total accountability from the people he leads.
Group conformity in the United States of America
Group conformity is still common in the US. Members of a group fear looking the odd ones out. They don’t like when they get ridiculed by their colleagues in a group. This thinking has brought about the effect of socialization n social groups. The tradition of a group is to act and behave in a uniform manner.
Authority
Those who have authority have the power to control others. Authority commands obedience. People who have power and authority in their hands influence others to even cause harm to others. Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. People obey authority because they fear repercussions in case they disobey those who are in authority.
Obesity and emotions
Obesity is amongst the leading public health issue in the world today. I entirely agreed with Dr Christakis that social media regarding obesity and emotion and how they are spread by social media. People get socialized by what they read and watch over social media. They interact with information regarding the nutrition and lifestyle of people which they adopt through influence. Many people imitate how other people are living without looking at the negative implications of those lifestyles.
Webers’ ideal characteristics of bureaucracy
John Tyle Community College ought to embrace Webers’ idea of specialization in terms of the roles the college staff carries out to ensure quality service delivery. the college being a bureaucratic entity should organize various processes in the college in a systematic manner. The functions of the college should be occupied by people who are skilful and professional.
Principles of McDonaldization
The organizers take control of the Christmas event by taking control of every activity that is done during that time. They control and guide the young ones who take part in the celebration. People budget on their expenditures and where to get the necessary resources.
Organizers ensure the efficiency and predictability of the event. They do this to avoid wrongdoing and mistakes.
Major social institution
The family has been the major social institution that has influenced my life. The socialization that I have undergone since I was born has moulded me into a responsible man. It has inculcated in me the character of hard work. The hurdles of life we underwent as a family has strengthened and motivated me to continue working hard.
Conclusion
From the above, it is evident that sociological imaginations and socialization are influenced by a number of factors. Social groups, the family and social mediation has a major bearing on our socialization. It is evident that authority can be abused by those in power to cause harm and mayhem in our society.
