4042F Interpreting : Research Fellow Assessment Answers

Researching and writing these reports provides an opportunity to practise and demonstrate how you would prepare for an interpreting assignment.

Using the guidelines and headings below write a report of on ONE of the following interpreting situations:

1 School appeal hearing

2 Meeting between Head Teacher and parents to discuss child’s behaviour

3 Annual review for child with SEN

4 Meeting with EWO to discuss child’s attendance

5 Secondary transfer meeting

a) Where and how you found the information including a bibliographyof the methods used and evaluation of each method

b) Where the interview might take place (location)

c) Service provider(s) involved (job titles)

d) Questions which the service provider might ask the client

e) Relevant system/procedure information (how the system works, normal procedure, sequence of events, criteria, eligibility, arrangements for non-English speakers, etc)

f) Relevant legislation, including the client’s rights and entitlements

g) Any conflicts that could arise,including potential cultural or procedural issues and ways of overcoming them

i) Potential follow-up, including names, addresses and contact details of at least two relevant voluntary sector organisations which could support the client

It is one of the very useful methods that have proved handy in finding information regarding the chosen topic. It is useful in giving information related to the ways, in which a parent teacher meeting must be conducted. This method also enabled us to know that there can be many different topics on which a head teacher and the parents can talk. This method gives a lot of information about the rules that both the head teacher and the parents must abide by, while discussing about the child’s behavior.

Books

This has also been a very useful research method. The book that has been used for gathering information gave many essential pieces of information based on the different factors that is responsible for influencing the relationship between the parent and the teacher. This is a very useful and interesting source of information because the readers or the researchers can use this book for many different purposes ass per their need and area of interest. This book also talks about the role of the parents in the start of their child’s education and talks about the relationship that child develops with his teacher at school and how this is influenced.

Leaflets

The leaflets have also been very much helpful as a research method because it enabled the researcher to get the basic and clear idea about the usefulness of a parent teacher meeting very quickly. This is important because it can convey the research aim right through visual representation. Just by taking a look at the leaflets it can be comprehended very easily why and how must a meeting between a head teacher and parent be conducted for discussing several issues including the issue of the child’s behavior.

b A favorable place for carrying on the meeting between a head teacher and parents in order to discuss the behavior of the child is the school or a private meeting place or even in a doctor’ clinic as per the need and the requirement. The meeting will either take place in the school or it can also take place at some private place of meeting if the issue of discussion is very serious. As the mentioned issue over here is that of the child behavior.

C The service providers involved here are the head teacher and the parent of the child and there can also be some third party service providers like a psychiatrist if there is any serious issue with the child and if the teacher is suggesting for any treatment like counseling.

D The questions that the service provider (Head teacher) might ask are

• Have there been any disturbing events that the child has faced recently?
• Any significant event that took place during the childhood that needs a special mention?

• The parents will also share the childhood history of their child or any notable events that have taken place
• If the service providers are non English speakers then a translator must be kept who would translate and interpret the conversation between the head teacher and the parents of the child.

There must not be any tampering done with the news. It is the duty of the head teacher to see that none of her words or actions is hurting the emotions of the parents or that of the child.

G. Conflicts that can arise during this process are

• Fear of the loss of confidentiality on part of the parents
• Parents can initially be very reluctant in sharing their family history or the childhood history of their child.

These conflicts can be resolved by providing the parents with complete security regarding their personal details and personal information. Apart from this, proper cooperation and patience is also needed on the side of both the parent and the head teacher. If something serious is noticed in the child’s behavior like hyper activeness or lack of concentration then a Doctor must be consulted to assure the parents regarding the necessary steps needed for curing properly detecting and curing the illness of the child.

H. The outcomes of this session could possibly help the teacher and the parents to reach to a conclusion regarding the behavior of the child and also to decide about the further steps that is to be taken for helping and supporting the child.

The teacher and the parents can make joint efforts for helping and supporting the child and can actively contact the above mentioned organizations for giving the child the necessary help that is needed.
