Choose an operation for a workplace where you once worked or with which you are familiar where either chemical hazards or noise exposures were present. If you have never worked in a location where chemical hazards or noise are present, read about some examples on OSHA’s website and choose one that interests you. Complete the following tasks
essay:

1. Summarize the steps you would take to perform a hazard assessment of your chosen operation. Make sure you list
the chemical hazards or noise hazards that are present using the example hazard assessment from OSHA’s website
or one with which you are already familiar.

2. Discuss the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for controlling occupational hazards in relation to the
operation you chose.

3. Choose one hazard that you identified. The hazard can be a chemical or noise hazard. Summarize how you would
evaluate employee exposures to the hazard. Include information about any sampling method you would use, how
many samples you would collect, the types of samples you would collect (e.g., personal or area, TWA or short-term),
and to which standards you would apply the results.

4. Assume there are several results indicating that employees are exposed to levels exceeding the applicable OSHA
PEL. Using OSHA’s Hierarchy of Controls, summarize the control methods you would employ to reduce the risk for
employees to an acceptable level. Your summary should include examples from each level of OSHA’s Hierarchy of
Controls with a discussion of why you think the control would or would not be an effective method for reducing the
exposure to an acceptable level.

5. Discuss how you would evaluate the effectiveness of the control methods you chose, both in the short-term and for
the next 5 years.

Answer

Hazard

From the website of OSHA, I am picking an example of shipyard industry. In performing a hazard assessment, several sages need to be considered ranging from the collection of information about the hazards existing in the workplace, reviewing of the records of illnesses and injuries, conducting various inspections in the workplace from time to time, and many others discussed below;

Identifying controls is another step that is taken into account. Sufficient information exists to assist employers to examine the options for eliminating the recognized hazards and just before any control is selected, it is very crucial to ask workers' effort on their effectiveness (Bedi et,.al, 2007).

Additionally, developing and updating a hazard control plan is very crucial. This plan outlines how a selected control is to be implemented; an efficient plan will be first to address those hazards that are very serious. Another thing is to select controls; the executives in the shipyard should select those controls that are the most permanent and very useful. Selecting controls is achieved by taking control of those hazards that can likely cause deaths or can harm the employees.

Moreover, selection of controls that ensures employees protection during emergencies is essential. An effective hazard control plan must take into account the worker's protection especially when they are performing extra duties and during emergencies. For instance, in the shipyard industry, these emergencies could include fires and natural disasters. Lastly, there is a need to follow up the implemented control and to ensure that it is efficient and effective. To accomplish this, executives must track the progress pertaining implementation of the controls, and also they should conduct inspection and evaluation of the controls once they have identified.

Uses of personal protective equipment for controlling hazards

Personal protective equipment also known as PPE is a specialized tool or clothing that is worn by employees to minimize contact with hazards that can cause harm and illnesses in the workplace. In this case, we are considering the shipyard industry, with several hazards such as machinery hazards and working conditions among many others.

Employees of an industry like shipyard use several types of personal protective equipment for various reasons for instance; gloves to protect their hands, aprons for protecting their skin and respirators to protect their respiratory tract from airborne diseases.

Employee's exposure to the working condition

Working condition is one of the hazards that employees at the shipyard are exposed mainly to, the shipyard is an uncomfortable workplace. It is an office with its walls made of glass. There is a great danger in everything that an employee at the shipyard is performing. Several safety measures need to be executed. The nature of the working condition is the main problem faced by employees at shipyard industry.

The controls methods

Administrative control involves isolation procedures where the injured employees and those that need special medical attention are isolated and attended to first. Secondly, engineering controls such as negative pressure rooms are set aside for patients with TB; the third is work practices control for instance not recapping needles while the last is the PPE control equipment, a tool that is very vital in protecting workers from exposure to hazards.

Control administrative method evaluation

I would evaluate the effectiveness of administrative control by analyzing injury statistics, meaning I would do some statistical analysis on the shipyard industry (Wilburn,2004) . Also, I would review the industry committee recommendations; this includes scrutinizing the report's number and period of response. And finally, I would do some analysis on the employees' cover and compensation data.
