Q320 English Literature : Cultural Assessment Answers
Answer:
How and why English becomes the language of science!
Reading Pennycook (2014), it has been found that there have been significant changes towards global scientific community evident from the middle of 18th century. English might not be prevalent in some of the major non-English speaking countries like Germany, Spain and France but there is no doubt that the language is prevalent in the society and the academic papers are outnumbered that are published in the common English language. Newton’s Principia Mathematica had been published in Latin and Curie’s work was published in French but all these papers were ultimately translated to the English language keeping the global perspective into consideration.
The world’s largest database for peer-reviewed journals, SCOPUS, made it compulsory that to qualify a journal for inclusion in this data base, the abstract of the journal at least has to be in English. In fact, the non-English written articles got limited reach of the audiences. The data base has more than 21, 000 articles from over 239 countries (Lee et al. 2015). All these perspectives have clearly indicated the fact that if one wants that their work needs to be globally recognized, the paper needs to be published in the English language that it would be acceptable among others in different countries.
Consequently, it has been evident that many Universities are also opting English as their primary language for educating the non-English Students as well. The phenomenon has been prevalent in the higher and primary education as well (Lee et al. 2015). Since, science is a subject that is taught worldwide, if a common language is used for the purpose of teaching, it will certainly going to affect the teaching and learning style that the education system would follow. It was rather assumed that if one can speak English, the person would be able to communicate with others in a common language, English.
