Short Essay

In this essay, I would highlight a personal experience when I someone had tried to persuade me with the help of a logical fallacy out of the 17 logical fallacies commonly used in practice. This happened around three years back just before the Thanksgiving holidays were about to start. In our family, we are brought up in an environment where there is a custom of spending this special holiday with family members who come together from different parts of the country. That year was however different from me and looking back I do not regret it. One of my close friends had always told me about how she spends her holidays by going for a vacation to different places and enjoying herself.

I had visited her place before the holidays when she informed me that she was about to go to Miami to spend her Thanksgiving holidays. She thereafter made attempts to persuade me to go with her during the holidays to Miami. She tried to convince me very hard, that led to an argument between the two of us. As I told her that it was difficult for me to break the tradition, she kept persuading me by telling me that I would have a gala time if I went with her. Finally, she used the fallacy that “it is not necessary that tradition is always right”. This is the fallacy of “Self-Evident Truth”. Through such a fallacy, a phrase is used that makes the listener feel morally inferior and intellectually inferior if he does not agree (Bennett, 2016).

The fallacy used worked for my friend as it made me change my decision. I was finally convinced to go with her. Fortunately, my family was supportive of my decision, and I spent a wonderful Thanksgiving vacation at Miami with my friend.

Plagiarism is the term used for an act of copying or borrowing any original idea from different sources and considering it as own work. This refers to taking conversations or writings from external sources and passing them off as own work. Plagiarised work includes books, web pages, interviews, artworks, articles, email messages, television shows or any other form of medium. Whenever any concept or information is taken from a source and paraphrased or summarised, there is a necessity to declare the exact source of the piece of information in the work that is presently done. This is known as an internal citation. Failing to cite and acknowledge else’s ideas and work through internal citation is known as plagiarism. Plagiarism means to steal other’s ideas and pass it off to others; to use other’s production without source crediting; to commit theft of literary work;  to present as original ideas after deriving from existing sources. Plagiarism is a form of deception (lib.usm.edu 2017).
