Introduction.
Training is interpreted as a planned process to modify approach, skills, behavior or knowledge through learning experience aimed at achieving efficient and effective performance in an activity or range of activities (Wajdi Milhem). Training is required to ensure that all employees have the necessary work
- related skills, Techniques, and knowledge aimed at meeting the current day business needs as well as to help them develop skills and knowledge for the future roles and responsibilities (Vinesh). Training ensures that employees add value to the organization and that they can comfortably perform their duties as they grow themselves.
Training can either be on the job or off the vocational training. As the human resource manager, while developing a training plan for the employees, the type of training has to be considered as with on job training is carried out in the workplace during working hours while off vocational training is carried off- site and off- line.
A training plan encompasses different components such as the needed training, the purpose, target trainees, the number to be trained, the trainer, the time and frequency of training.

Identifying the gaps that exist between employees and needs of the organization is essential in adopting an effective training plan. For example, the difference in skills, knowledge, and attitudes with news employee orientation, hazardous material handling, equipment training, workplace safety, change management, employee development amongst others require a carefully thought out process. Therefore, managers should assess the need gap between employees and the organization at large to come up with the necessary training that is relevant.
Training is meant to achieve a set of objectives which shows how the training will help the company. A training plan should ensure for each of the suggested training the goal is reached. For example, if the needed training is on Document Management System, the objective will be to help the company stay current and upgrading to DMS.
All across the board, employees need to be trained to either meet the current needs or future needs of the organization. From top managers, middle-level managers, line managers, department heads, supervisors and all general employees need the training to remain relevant with the needs of the market. Training is always tailored for a target group hence need to identify the employees requiring the training.
Training is a cost to the organization, and therefore the choice of the trainer should be a considered. External trainers are expensive to consult, unlike in-house trainers. The number of the people to be trained and the time allocated is an important factor to ensure successful execution of training plan.
In conclusion, training of employees is quite important as it bridges the skills, knowledge and attitude gap between the employees and the organization. The need for a training plan for employees is, therefore, critical and should be developed and implemented if the company is to remain efficient and profitable.
