Assignment 1 gave you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to apply some of the metaphors we covered early in the course. In Assignment 2, we take things to the next level – instead of applying an existing metaphor for organisations, you and your team will create an entirely new one! Your team will develop a new metaphor inspired by the organisational experiences of 2 guest interviewees, who will be interviewed in the Week 6 and 7 lectures. You will then “pitch” this new metaphor in your Week 10 or 11 tutorial either as a live presentation or as a pre-recorded video presentation.


Your presentation will be assessed on the extent to which it meets the following criteria (the extent which your mark for each criteria contributes to your overall assignment mark is displayed in brackets):To what extent does the new metaphor help us to see organisations in a new light (i.e., in a way that the other metaphors covered in the
course readings/lectures do not) To what extent is the new metaphor relevant to other organisations beyond those described by the interviewees To what extent is the new metaphor grounded in data (e.g., statements made by the interviewees, additional evidence collected from other sources)

In order to understand organizational philosophies, metaphors are often used to describe organizationsOrganizational performances depend on these metaphors as they help to understand the progress paths that they essentially undertake Organizations have to establish clear goals and objectives for the achievement of crucial goals The metaphors that are associated with organizations are focused towards establishing the organizational philosophy.

Organizations as Artists

In today’s world organizations are no longer just business enterprises The metaphor of “Artist” can easily be attributed to organizations in the present corporate scenario The term can be used in a way to describe how companies treat their functional activities An organization as an artist will definitely look forward to project artistic values through their operational standards Moreover, each artist has  some kind of background story behind their paintings As artists organizational entrepreneurs also have a lot of essential background behind the work the organizations they establish (Strati, 2017).

For example – Pera Barrett is the person behind Shoebox Christmas He started the job in order to cater to the needs of underprivileged children Similarly the organizations such as Microsoft, Apple and Walmart came into being as the people behind them had important background stories (Matzdorf & Sen, 2016) Tanya Wilson had a strong backstory behind the establishment of Callaghan Innovation She had to manage roles of a sportsperson,  tackle language challenges and initial business setbacks Organizations like Apple, Amazon and Microsoft went through tough situations to emerge as artists in the corporate world.

Leadership in Organizations

When organizations are treated as Artists, charismatic leadership needs to be formed This ensures that the artistic vision of the organization become one with the entrepreneur as the principle artist (Oswick & Grant, 2016) Organizations today have to work in accordance with the artistic visions of their entrepreneurs Thus, it becomes very important that organizations utilize artistic leadership towards their artistic endeavors Tanya Wilson of Callaghan innovation faced a tough time while establishing her business (Ho, 2015) It can be considered to be the setbacks that artists receive while trying to produce art pieces.

Charisma lies in the perspectives of leaders as artists Steve Jobs was able to lead an organization like apple due to his innovative vision Innovation and art can be related as both consider bringing forward new ideas organizational aspects and Art In evaluating organizations as artists famous paintings can be attributed to the artistic struggles organizations had to go through The American Gothic is a famous painting by Grant Wood and depicts the determination of Americans during times of the great depression This painting very aptly describes the Callaghan Innovation and the determined attitudes of the organization.

Organizational Influence

Influence depends on various essential factors Charismatic leadership Building trust among the team Competence of the managers Perception of the teams in regards to the potential of managers and the organization (Di Stefano, Peteraf & Verona, 2014) Usage of metaphors are important as it can effectively influence the performances of employees Using stories that can be related to by the workers and employees can motivate them Emotional support is necessary as it is required to keep the employees mentally fit (Matzdorf & Sen, 2016).

An important aspect of artistic leadership is to integrate the artistic vision with organizational elements Communicational aspects also fall under organizational influence and have to be significantly enhanced There is an artistic value in organizational influence as well as artistic approach can help employees to perform better Artist develop artistic tendencies through their experiences in life Similarly organizations gain much experience through their corporate experiences Employees gain experiences along with the organization Hence, just like artists experience has substantial influence over growth and development.

Conclusion

The motive of organizations being artist serve the purpose of creating a significant progress path for the company Artistic value of organizations lie in the fact that they are performers in the organizational levels The term “Artist” can be  applied for both the organizations and the entrepreneurs and be used as a common term to describe the organizational approach Having strong background experiences positively enhances the potential of both artists and organizations
