Man6301 Project Risk Management- Data Assessment Answers
Data Collection
You should present the data collection to reflect a structured approach to the treatment of each risk:
- Naming the risk precisely (e.g. “There is a risk that…”)
- Stating the point at which the risk may occur
- Describing the risk succinctly
- Classifying the risk using appropriate risk breakdown categories
- Assessing the risk
- Justifying its inclusion through research, published cases, news reports etc.
Answer
Business Report
Background Information
The aim of this report is to discuss the risks related to the major sporting events. The focus is given on the assessment of the 2018 Football World Cup for the Australian Football Team. The project analyses the risks related to the football team of Australia and it will deliver the report to the National World Cup 2018 Football Cup Management Committee of Australia. The focus is on the various risks. The project has proposed to six months plan to mitigate the risks. The project has made some recommendations to the management committee. The necessary steps should be taken to keep the team healthy and there should not be any metal pressure to them. Their travelling, stay, security and coaching should be taken care by the committee. The players will remain focused on the performance instead of focusing on irrelevant work. It will help the Australian team to perform in the mega event(Tiede, Tom, 2014).
Aim and success criteria for the project:
The aim of the project is to analyse the risks related to the football team of Australia for the upcoming Football World Cup to be held in the year 2018 in Russia. The report focuses on the five important risks and proposes recommendations to the National Football Cup Management Committee of Australia in order to mitigate the risks in a six months project plan.
Risk Appetite and risk tolerance
The report has identified five important risks. The risks are analysed and the level of the risks are also defined. There are some risks which are very low in the level and there are some risks those come under risk which can be tolerable. These risks are called risk appetite and the risk which is very high in nature called risk tolerance. Health and accommodation come under risk appetite and terrorism and crowd are the two important risks come under risks tolerance.
Risk Breakdown Structure
Risk management is one of the important functions of the project management. Risks are always vulnerable and the project leaders give priority to mitigate the risks
(Crawford & Benedetto, 2011). The current situation of the global sports scenario is very competitive and complex. It requires adequate planning, budgeting, scheduling, equipment, insurance coverage, facility management, contract etc(Kichuk, 2010). The project management makes a systematic study of the risks, identify the risks, analyse the risks, evaluate the risks, monitor the risks and communicate the risks(Tiede, Tom, 2014). The risk management, therefore, focuses on resolving the issues that are unforeseen and they can create issues for the project in the future. The risks may be from planning, budgeting, environmental, human resources, infrastructure, media, legacy, organisation, participation, sports, threats and terrorism etc(simplilearn.com, 2013).
Here the risk breakdown structure has been made to identify the risks and the vulnerability of the risks. They are highlighted below in the risk breakdown structure.
Risks Probability
Risk probability is an assessment that is made systematically to evaluate the magnitude and likelihood of thee risks. The severity in the risks analysed in the projects are there. There are also some risks they make occur and the probability is there.
The risks related to the sports events are different from the risks of the other projects. There is always a need for understanding the strategies of the team for the events and the knowledge about the team and the process of the sports event will give a good amount of knowledge to the project management about the risks related to the event and to the team(Luu, Kim, & Huynh, 2008)
There are many issues which disturb the growth of the strategies and that cannot be implemented. The injury, health related issues, depression, more travelling, accommodation, problems from the crowd, problem from the media and from terrorism have become most important factors that bring risks to the event and the project management(Qureshi & Warraich, 2009).
Risk consequence
The report makes an analysis of the risk and identifies the impact of the risks. They are negligible, marginal, moderate, critical and catastrophic. The risk has been divided as per probability. This will show which risk is required to be avoided and which risk will be mitigated.
Risk Management Strategy
Risk response strategy
The management of the national football team focuses on managing every issue that come before the team. The committee wants to clarify the small issues so that the players will not feel disheartened so that it will affect to his game.
The risks will only be reduced ifa good amount of preparation will be done. The logistic problems, living style of the players, food and hygiene, illness, safety, depression, favourable leaders and coaches, etc. are some of the important factors that are required to be handled. These will create a positive impact on the players and they will perform better(Cox, Issa, & Aherns, 2013). The players will remain psychologically fit for the game and the performance will be absolutely better. After the identification of the risks, the management will take necessary steps to reduce the risks. The success of the Australian team depends upon the capabilities of the management that manage projects. The project will be successful only when the management will work for development plan and there must be specific preparation for the Football World Cup to be held in Russia in the year 2018.
Here the risk response strategy has been which will highlight how to deal with risks associated to the project.
Category |
Risk Statement |
Risk Response |
Health |
Infection- During the match infection may occur while coming with physical contact with players |
Mitigate: Proper health habits will be taught to the players and they will remain alert to follow the directives of the physicians |

Living and Transport |
Accommodation In Russia, there will be pressure for hotels and stay facility.
|
Transfer: The organizer of the events will be responsible for managing the accommodation. |
|
Huge transport challenges In Russia transport challenges are there. There are no adequate facilities for giving transport to 48 teams and the officials in the country |

Avoid The players will not focus on crowd. They will avoid it. |
Risk Register
The risk will be identified and each risk will be noted in the register for verification. In the appendix I have attached the risk register for the record of the risk and how to comply them. As per the risk the management will make plan and priority will be given for the mitigation, avoidance and acceptance as per the requirements. Risks like terrorism and crowd required to be given priority and the probability of them is very high
Recommendations
The Football World Cup is a major event for the Australian Football Team. The team should be given adequate support so that they will perform better. The risks should be avoided on a priority basis(smartsheet.com, 2016).
Reduction
The health related issues should be avoided by appointing qualified doctors. They will monitor the health of the players. The physiotherapists will take care the fitness of the players. The management will see that the players are not given much pressure to play many matches before the mega events. The psychologists should be appointed to deal the state of the mind of the players(Jamison, 2010).
Avoidance
The management should also make plan for travelling of the players and coaches should be given top priority. The management of the team should remain with the players to monitor their activity in the field and off the field. The players should be given adequate accommodation and living room should be hygienic and free from infection. Media should not be allowed to interfere into the privacy of the players. The security will be the major concern for the management(Gelec &Wagner, 2014). The team will not allow the players to move freely and will not allow to go to bar or hotel without any security.
Diffusion
The management will communicate the risks to the players and will alert them to remain sincere and will encourage avoiding any risk they find. The priority will be given to keep more support staff to take care of the health and other important areas of the players(Kumar, 2009).
Relationships
The risks will be reduced with adequate relationships of all the stakeholders. All the risks identified by the management will be recorded in the register. All will be assed as per the norms and as per the priority the risks will be mitigated(Kwak, 2014).
Limitation
This report is based on the interview of the few people and the secondary sources available in the print media and website. All the information is required to be evaluated. The high risk zone may not be so crucial for the team. The time constrain is another important factor to get less information. But this empirical study allows for further research in the future.
Conclusion
Risks are the most important concern for the project management. The risks are required to be identified and as per the risk, the mitigation programme should be made. The Australian team will face major problems from health, terrorists and accommodation. The management requires making plan to solve these issues as per the recommendations given.
