Introduction
The human resource management (HRM) teams of the various organizations since the traditional times have always been underappreciated despite of performing the major job role of attracting as well as recruiting the employees for the organization (Brewster, Chung and Sparrow 2016). The net result of this aspect is the fact that the HRM teams of the various enterprises are often relegated to the background and are often deemed to be non-essential part of the organization (Reiche, Harzing and Tenzer 2018). However, in the recent times, it is seen that this perception of the organizations and also the individuals is changing and the HRM teams are getting not only the appreciation but also the credit which is their due (Reiche et al. 2016). This change in the attitude of the organization can be seen as the net result of the various kinds of research works which has been performed on the role of the HRM within the organizations and also the recent industry trends (Bratton and Gold 2017). The anthology “The Rise of HR Wisdom from 73 Thought Leaders” which is an anthology of essays related to the concept of HRM by the editors Ulrich, Schiemann and Sartain is an important one. In this paper a review of this anthology will be conducted on the basis of the views articulated in the anthology and its implications.
“The Rise of HR Wisdom from 73 Thought Leaders”
According to Prof. Ulrich, the editor of the anthology, “The intent of this collection is to help HR professionals seize the new, emerging opportunities occurring in talent development and to navigate the challenges of an ever-changing landscape” (Ulrich et al. 2015). The anthology published in the year 2015 tries to highlight the increasingly diversified as well as important that the HRM teams of the modern day organizations are required to perform (Ulrich et al. 2015). The anthology through the various essays states that the leaders and also the managers of the various organizations are increasingly become aware of the important job roles that the HRM performs. The end result of this is the fact that the various HR professionals are increasingly being seen as the “principal stewards of their organizations’ talent” (Ulrich et al. 2015). This change in the mindset of the organizations can be seen as the realization of the fact that the human resources are the most essential entities for the institutional wellbeing of the organization and also for its performance. In this context, the job role of the HR professionals to recruit these resources and also to equip them with the relevant job skills which will help them to perform as per the expectations of the organization becomes important. The HR professionals of the contemporary times are thus imbued with the role of the management of the talent and also the culture of the organization as well. As a matter of fact, one of the current job roles of the HR professionals within the various organizations is to work in close association with the various departments and also the managers or the leaders and help in the creation of a culture wherein the employees will perform in an effective manner (Ulrich et al. 2015).
The essayists also discuss in the anthology about the manner in which the HR professionals need to meet the growing expectations of the organizations regarding the job roles that they need to perform within the organizations. Furthermore, the essayists also discuss about the various tool as well as strategies that the HR professionals need to utilize so as to meet the increasing demands of their job roles. The essayists suggest that some of the most effective ways to obtain these ends are the utilization of the tools of the organizational culture, talent management, reward management and others (Ulrich et al. 2015). The anthology suggests that the use of a congenial organizational culture which will focus on the creation of a collective work culture and also promote engagement of the employees is likely to make the job role of the HR professionals much easier (Ulrich et al. 2015). This will also enable the HR professionals to manage the human resources and also the talent of the organization in a more adequate manner which will be beneficial for the organization. Thus, it can be said that the various essayists in the anthology through their essays are trying to change the opinion of the people as well as the organizations regarding the job roles that the HR professionals perform within the organizations.
Insight after reading the anthology
The anthology “The Rise of HR Wisdom from 73 Thought Leaders” reveals insightful information regarding the contemporary job roles of the HR professionals. For example, in the first essay of the anthology Josh Bersin entitled “HR’s Role in the Digital Workplace: A Time for Reinvention” a discussion regarding the manner in which the various HR professionals are required to manage the human capital of the organization in the face of the digital revolution is undertaken (Ulrich et al. 2015). Another insightful section of the anthology is the fact that various essays of the work like Wayne F. Cascio’s “Environmental Scanning: An Emerging Challenge for HR Professionals” discuss about the importance of scanning the environment of the organization and thereby develop strategies or measures for the management of the employees in like manner (Ulrich et al. 2015). In addition to these, several sections of the anthology like the essays “HR as Guardian of the Future” and others discuss about the manner in which the HR professionals are treated as stewards of the organization and thus need to take the onus of the management as well as the development of the talent of the organization (Ulrich et al. 2015). It is pertinent to note that these concepts along with the other ones like the role of the HR professionals in the improvement of the talent of the organization, the need for transparency for the conduct of the work of the HR professionals and others are something which are not being discussed in the other anthology related to the concept of HRM.
