Task 1:
Task 2:
Identify your own development needs and the activities required to meet them. To do this, list the criteria you are either week in or have no experience in, and then identify the activities you need to make your weaknesses, strengths.
Task 3:
To become a professional engineer, you need to have achieved the correct qualifications and experience. You need to identify the qualifications and experience you need to become an ‘Incorporated Engineer’ using the ‘Standard Routes to Registration as a Professional Engineer or Technician’ and Parts A to C of the ‘UK-SPEC Competences and Commitment Standard for Incorporated Engineers, found in the appendix of this assignment.
Task 4:
Create a personal and professional plan using the ‘Developing: Goal Setting and Action Planning’ form, which can be found in Unit 27 on the VLE. Use the table to plan your goals needed to become a professional engineer.
Answer:
Task 1:1 A
Transferable skills of Self-assessment are issues which entail one's knowledge on a given procedures, vocabulary, and topics which are needed to partake a given work. These kills include the weaknesses as well as the strength of one's field of operations such as in the field of engineering. The below are some of my strength;
- I trust in working as a team since no engineer can work alone
- I have the ability to remember the information on any given procedure on doing a given duty.
- Believing in working with others ( my co-workers ) in either the office or in the field during work
- Can finish the allocated task in time without any delay
- I am self-motivated with the job am doing(Enrique, 2013).
- I always plan on how to solve and to partake my engineering tasks assigned to me.
- Am always able to give duties to those who are working under me and check their work keenly.
- I have the ability to manage money and budget in the procurement of any engineering components.
Checking keenly on my aforementioned strengths and also the manner I did my research and study of my HND course (Abraham, 2013). I fully believe that am highly qualified on the course by doing the work with a team, being able to finish my tasks by the stipulated deadline, having the ability to control employees working under me and also being able to budget and also procure the engineering components.
Even though I have some strength, I also face some weaknesses which are highlighted below;
- I often face some problems to successfully solve all the engineering problems(Craig, 2013).
- I always lack the trust to work alone
- I face a big problem when it comes to dealing with IT technology
- Am often in haste to in doing every task I have. Thus it is tough for me to me patient
- I am afraid of speaking in a public or crowd.
I noticed that the above challenges mentioned I could easily eliminate some of them like lack of the confident to talk in public. My first language which is well conversant with is not English, and most people were speaking and understanding English, so I was fearing from speaking in English in public, S but after I shall fully understand the language I could easily speak in public (Hart, 2011). I would also promote working with peers to help me appreciate everyone’s idea which will highly help to improve on our research.
Regions of development
I must also know and have a full knowledge of computers (information technology) for this is very important for an individual who wants to be a good engineer since most of the engineering tasks are performed using laptops and computers, i.e., MATLAB simulation. AUTOCAD, Simulink among others. With time I will learn too how to be patient when performing any duty with my peers since not everyone is having the equal speed for some are relatively slow but very accurate, and others are fast but do shoddy work. I will have to learn on how to solve engineering problems and also practice the communication skills since engineering requires passing of the information and instructions to my peers and my juniors as well (innocent, 2013).
Task 1:1 B
According to my weaknesses and strength, I highlighted above; I will confidently affirm that I fully comprehend the social skills and my personal skills thus I am very proud to affirm that my strength makes me qualify for the duties which are required to be solved by a successful engineer (Arnette, 2011). From the aforementioned strength such as work in a group performing my task within the stipulated deadline believing in the work done by others and also being able to remember all the steps given in any procedure are my major attributes to reach my destiny of becoming a good engineer. These I partook while I was studying with my peers in my HND course. I enjoyed working with group members, and I have learned how to appreciate their contributions and efforts in any of their contributions. The attribute I have for example time management, working with group members, believing in the work done by a group member, follow the instructions and procedures correctly always bring joy in my heart that being in the correct path to my destiny of becoming a very good engineer (Gerald, 2015).
Task 2:
The process of becoming a good engineer is not very easy as one may think of, the journey involves several vigorous regulations checks and several exams where an individual can easily fail hence failing to reach his / her destiny. These technical regulations are required of any individual who wants to become an engineer may constitute; communication skills, having the ability to work in a team and develop an innovative thoughts and also posing some innovative thinking. Anyone calling himself an engineer and he or she is not able to have an innovative thinking is not legible to innovate devices, components and also machines which are used to help solve any environmental problem. A competent engineer should be able to pose a good communication skills to enable him, or she convey information from one point to another. (Anil, 2011)
For the sake of self-assessment of transferable skills, am fully convinced beyond doubt that I have better attributes of an individual who is having hopes of becoming a competent engineer. However, there is some key attribute which I still miss and these are what result to my weaknesses which are mentioned above like lack of patience, inability to communicate I public of which these key attributes are very vital for someone who opted to become a good engineer. Since these key attributes are so much important, I will hence try my best to improve on them so that I can have an understanding of all or most of job which I will be able to undertake in my field of work.
The list given below shows my weakness according to the Self-assessment for the transferable skills and also contains the probable solution for the weakness I have.
Weaknesses |
Solutions for improving the weaknesses |
Lack of the ability to pinpoint the key principles for developing good professional skills |
Continuous quality improvement: Cautiously empathetic of the essential principles of the growth of the professional engineering skills. Planning and developing the professional skills could be done by self-evaluation test. |
Disinclination for altering my concepts, practices, and ideas with the trending knowledge |
Extemporizing of the activities: Managing workers for meeting the alterations of technical and managerial needs. Keeping track of the latest updates and development of the technology would be largely beneficial for the successful career as a competent engineer. |
Inadequate knowledge of the type of work available for me in my engineering discipline |
Technical and commercial management: It is very vital for searching of better prospects and options as an engineer. It would help in obtaining conversant with the development on oneself from both socially and financially. |
Task 3:
The following are the steps which must be followed for an individual to be a competent technician or a competent engineer.
- The first step in the journey of registration is to obtain a post graduate certificate and other required qualifications.
- One need to join a professional engineering institution which has a legal license from the engineering council of the country to allow the institution to offer the courses.
- Then taking the records of the professional development with the help of previous academic qualifications, training of workers and the process of the outlines as well(Nixon, 2014).
- The individual then feels that he or she is very ready to demonstrate his or her professional he or she is now free to apply for the evaluation so that the recognized body can avail and evaluate him or her.
- After that there will be a demonstration of the transferrable skills of an individual, the skills are demonstrated by the individual who has applied and who wants to work with another member of the group and also he or her who has applied to be either engineer or a technician. Those skills include very good interpersonal relationship within the workers(Giovanni, 2013).
- Finally, there is confirming if the applicant can show commitment to the professional standards which constitutes the health and safety during the practice, checking the health and the safety during any engineering work is very vital since if an accident occurs in the engineering field, then the accident may result in death. These accidents may occur due to laziness or some assumptions which at the end may even result in the closure of the engineering firm depending on the accident and loss(C, 2011).

Locke’s Goal setting theory
For a business, its objective is through employing the SMART approach which is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound (Robert Dueck, 2011). Local is a study which has given some outcome and comprehended that if higher and tougher goals are set, then the workers would then do extra hard work and become motivated to work hard (James, 2016). This will create a sense of triumph when the workers to notice their set goals. After that, he recognized principles by which the probabilities of execution of the goals could be improved (Denish, 2013). These principles include commitment, feedback, clarity, challenge, and the complexity of the task. The principles are illustrated below;
- Feedback: Is an important for any communication in a firm, because of the feedback an individual or accompany may get to know how the employees respond to the management of the firm of which this can help to improve on the weaknesses and maintain the strength
- Challenge: Workers are more inspired to work harder if more challenges are put in front of them. They attain the challenges after they have worked harder to achieve the required result. If the workers achieve the desired result, they should be motivated, and this will make them work harder(Kauma, 2012).
- Clarity: If the goals set are very clear then it became easier to be attained, this will help to give a time span in which the work should be completed(Hiroshi, 2015). Clarity reduces the misunderstanding in the organization help it becomes very easy to achieve the set objectives
- Commitment: The objectives which are conservative to the workers would result to assurance toward hard work of the workers. The goals set should be regular and highly relevant to their working procedures, the workers would consider the set goals to be stable
- The complexity of the TASK: If the task is made to appear very complex then the employees will try their best to overcome the complexity and in the process, the quality of the operation and management is highly improved(Denish, 2013).
