Nurse Civility is an issue that nurses should practice over time. As such, from the video, we can analyze the conversation between Masaya and Alicia as an indicative of the cultural diversity within the workplace. First, as a nurse leader, I would use my ability to empower and take part in skill development as well as discussing the necessary codes of ethics to the team in which Masaya is involved. I would empower Masaya so that he can be able to feel in place with other team members. Additionally, empowerment has an inverse relationship with workplace incivility and supervisor incivility. Through dynamic interactions, Masaya can blend in with the team, and he will be nurtured into the new environment so as he can understand the cultural and organizational culture within the healthcare facility.
Incivility is not clear in this scenario as there were no cases where Masaya was mistreated but he narrates that people were surprised when he responds to people with “Yes sir/madam.” As such he can fix this through active interactions with other colleagues within the organization. The most common them within the video, the article, and the Civility Index is the issue to deal with workplace incivility and cultural diversity. First, in the video, we can see Masaya is a Filipino and has to blend with the American culture. Also, the team has to appreciate Masaya culture. In the Civility Index, the questions depict issues with respect and adhering to the codes of ethics. In the article, it discusses that incivility behavior that many nurses practice with the organizations. Also, it discusses how these acts can be overcome through empowerment, skill development, and addressing the impaired practitioners (Lachman, 2015).
Conclusively, I can improve my score from 93 to a higher score through the observance of the code of ethics as well as respect the privacy and confidentiality of information. Also, I can improve my score by being culturally diverse.
