GGR313 Gender and the City: Elements of a Landscape
Gender in the Landscape Journal
This assignment requires you to identify elements of the landscapes that are part of your everyday life that contribute to the gendering of our world. To fulfill this assignment, you will identify one such element every week and write about it in your Gender in the Landscape Journal on Blackboard. The write-up should be 2-3 paragraphs long. The first paragraph should be a description of the element of the landscape being discussed and its context. The second and third paragraphs should be an analysis of this element of the landscape. A good analysis will incorporate one or more concepts from class and will discuss the implications of this element in affecting different people’s senses of belong, behaviours, or anything else that is relevant to your situation.
Although it is not required for every journal entry, you are encouraged to include a photograph of the landscape element you are discussing each week. If you are not very familiar with life and culture in Mississauga and the Toronto area and you find that it is difficult to ‘read’ the landscape here, you are welcome to include examples from places you are more familiar with. If you choose to do this, please try to include a visual to help the person marking your journal understand your analysis.
Answer:
Elements of a Landscape
The element of this landscape is color. It is the most important part of a landscape design. Planters, fences, and garden décor pieces are some of the ways to incorporate color into the landscape. In this photo, different trees have distinct colors. Combining the view of the trees and the road as one looks north from Faith Drive is just awesome. The foreground on Faith drive is open, as the trees concentrate in the middle ground

The color configuration of plants is a very important element as it influences the general visual effects of landscape design. When there is an inappropriate color configuration of plants, buildings, and roads in a landscape design, it often create problems by damaging the harmony of overall color on how the design work appears (Zhang, 2013). Consequently, the design affects behaviors and perception of the dwellers since they are not satisfied with their environment. Furthermore, color has a way of inspiring our daily lives, when individuals feel happy with the surrounding, they strive to work hard and maintain the status quo.
A well-designed landscape reflects character expression of the inhabitants and meeting the aesthetic requirements of people (Zhang, 2013). For example, incorporation of the different color of trees along the street expresses a peaceful atmosphere, where one can just relax by the roadside to pass time. The trees are also green which shows that they are well taken care of. The outstanding design of the landscape reflects a crystallization of art and technology, where the color of street light poles matches the road. Besides, there is also adequate space between the road and trees thus enhancing visual expression of the landscape.
