Answer:
Fallacies in the Media’s Spotlight
The rapid technological advancement has made public to become reliant on the media to inform them of the world happenings and of their local villages. Actually, a bigger percentage of the public believe the information received from diverse media as true and factual. However, the majority of people using media to pass information and the media itself have progressively slipped into using logical fallacies to appeal to their audience (Miller & Miller, 2016). Hence, abuse of language and reasoning are a common phenomenon. As a conseque
nce of these logical fallacies public is obscured from knowing the truth or the factual information. One of the consistently used fallacies is the fallacy of hasty generalization. The fallacy of hasty generalization refers to the use of inadequate evidence to make a general conclusion without considering all the variables. This essay, therefore, will analyze President Donald Trump use of fallacy of hasty generalization when raising the issues of illegal immigrants and Muslims in the United States of America.
For example on April 18th, 2017 President Trump while talking to Fox News, he labeled all illegal immigrant criminals who should be in prison or get the hell out of United States. President Trump thus accused illegal immigrants of crimes such as rape, murder, and other horrible crimes. As a consequence, he called for a quick legislation of illegal immigration policies to rid out of illegal immigrants from America. Labeling all illegal immigrants as criminals because of a few illegal immigrants who indulge in criminal activities is fallacious. Besides, on February 21st this year President Trump fixed his signature on an executive order authorizing the government to target all illegal immigrants for deportation. Hence, all immigrants and not only criminals are under threat of deportation. Furthermore, President Trump ordered the Secretary of Homeland Security to make a comprehensive list of all crimes committed by the immigrants within the United States so it can be easy to label all of them criminals (Johnson & Weigel, 2015).
Anchoring mass deportation of all illegal immigrants on the fallacy of generalization violates the tent of America as the land of the free and the home of the brave. Moreover, usage of insufficient data to label people criminals is improper. Similarly, forcing immigrants who have fled inhumane situations for a better and promising future under the tag criminals by use of state machinery is a crime against humanity (Posner, 2017). America has a history of human rights and of human face thus evicting hard working immigrants who work assiduously to maintain their families is an infringement of the American principles (Hong, 2017).
Equally, on February 5th, 2016 President Trump used insufficient and incorrect data to conclude that Muslims in America were a threat to the National Security. For example, he claimed that 600 of the Muslims in America justified the concept of jihad and thus posed a threat. Such use of inadequate and incorrect data to make such a judgment is a hasty generalization. Trump team only used a undersize percentage of the population of the Muslim to generalize this view about the Muslim in the United States. However, research done in 2014 indicated that only 0.9% of the American citizens are Muslim. Hence, the total American population is constituted of about 3.3 million Muslims. Releasing a survey done on 600 Muslims in a population of 3.3 million Muslims is inaccurate and inadequate (Carroll & Jacobson, 2015).
The same hasty generalization used to make claims that Muslim community is a threat to United States National Security was also used to formulate executive order to ban all Muslim refugees and especially from six major countries from entering into the United States of America. Some of the countries included in the executive order include Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, and Iran. Such hasty generalization has led to outright discrimination of the Muslim community in the United States of America. The executive order signed as a result of such inadequate data, therefore, stigmatizes Muslim community and the Islam faith. Such orders make America hostile and less great for the Muslim community (Healy & Barbaro, 2015).
In conclusion, it is explicit from the essay that the fallacy of hasty generalization leads to imprudent decisions as well as unreasonable policies. Similarly, unfair decisions made from hasty generalization can lead to unfair treatment of the affected community; hence, impairing Nation's pride and fuelling antagonism, crime, and hatred. Besides, hasty generalization also impairs proper use of reasoning. It is, therefore, recommendable that analysis is carried by use of adequate data to facilitate fair judgments.
