English 20 Literature : Self-Determination Assessment Answers

It is quite interesting to note how people have to overcome apparently impenetrable challenges and barriers before they can accomplish anything great in life. Even I myself  had encountered a variety of challenges on my way, out of which three challenges, I am going to discuss here.

The first challenge had been my lack of confidence, as I have grown up believing that I cannot accomplish much in my life. This is largely because I have an elder sibling who has been nothing short of a genius, and I have always found my parents compare my potentiality with her. Consequently, I have  grown up believing that I am not capable of solving difficult mathematic problems, I am not enough good in public speech, and I do not deserve much in life, even if I would put much effort. However, as I became more and more unconfident in life, one of my friends lent me the motivational book, The Power of Positive Thinking that had inspired me with tales of different successful people who had achieved enormous success, overcoming their petty barriers. I have learn that if I am confident and determined enough, I can achieve anything in life.

Negativity is the worst feeling one can experience in life. During my school days, while I was studying in sixth grade, I got poor grades in every subject, and I was being denied promotion. As I saw my other friends, getting promoted, I started feeling extremely low, depressed and despondent. Depression, anxiety and a sense of purposeless became my constant companions. I would not feel like studying, and neither would I feel the need to do well in life. At that time, it was my teacher who taught me the importance to persevere, even when one has nothing at hand. I was reluctant to go to school and study with mu juniors, but slowly I realized that if I have to prove myself a worthy student, I would need to push myself to study more, work harder and persevere until success knocks at my door. With my rigid determination, I scored well above the average and got promotion to the next class.

The third challenge that I overcome was owing to my communication problems. During the early days of my childhood, my communication skill was not good at all. Consequently, during public speech classes, or while answering back to the teacher’s question, I used to stammer. Needless to state, this made me a laughing stock in my class. Finding myself an object of ridicule and mockery, I used to keep mum even if I knew the answer. I started withdrawing myself from everyone. However, gradually with the help of speech therapy, and several counseling sessions, I regained my confidence and enhanced my interpersonal communication skills.

To conclude, I would like to state that every person comes across a number of obstacles that threaten to impede their success. However, with the help of rigid self-determination and perseverance, every person can accomplish anything in life.
