Topic
Treating Animals Humanely
Have you ever needed just the facts?
At times a formal, objectively written approach is more appropriate or even critical for establishing credibility so that your audience will listen and get informed.
The key to informative writing is making the shift from personal opinion to objective facts. This assignment will provide you with the important opportunity to practice making this shift to a style that is required in so many workplaces and throughout your academic program.
For this assignment, you will write an informative essay on the topic you have previously chosen. You will need to identify a problem, need, or process related to your topic.
Answer:
Introduction
Animal testing has been done since centuries and animals have been used for research the in the health and food areas. Millions of animals endure distressing and inhuman scientific procedures in labs for the benefit of humanity. It is true that it is because of the scientific research on animals that several scientific breakthroughs have been possible and the lives of many people made better. Still, one cannot ignore the ethics behind the animal experimentation in labs and what can be done to replace and refine animal testing and experiments.
Despite the scientific and technological breakthroughs, difficult questions remain on the subject o
f inhuman treatment of animals in the labs for research. How can the researchers and educators justify those distressing experiments on animals for the benefit of humanity? Animal use in scientific research remains a controversial and emotional subject, and the answers are not easy (De Villiers, 2012). It is essential to remove those unethical practices and look for alternative ways of research in medical field.
Importance of animal testing for research
Animal testing and research are considered of paramount prominence in the medicinal industry and it is not possible to cultivate new and effective medicines for without the research on animals and testing in labs. Animals are tested and researched in labs to examine physiological processes and develop therapeutic products. Statistics show a constant rise in the number of animals used for scientific purposes and biological research (Pinsdorf, 2017). Medical experiments on animals are carried out because of they share common diseases with the mankind.
Consumer awareness and legal perspectives
The customer is not too bothered about how a product is made or the kind of research that has gone behind. However, the consumer awareness is on the rise regarding the corporate social responsibility and environmental concerns (Alexandra, Huang, and Tseng, 2013). While different consumers may show varied opinions about animal testing, then the actual buying behavior of the customer is likely to get impacted if the labels of packages offer information on animal testing. The companies are not legally enforced to follow ethical and non-animal testing practices. Moreover the consumers carry differing views on the use of animal for testing in labs. Thus, any information related to animal testing is not available to the consumers, whether they are shopping for medications or cosmetics. Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 regulates the use of animals in research in the UK and ask for minimum use of animals for research and testing. (Westmoreland, & Holmes, 2009). Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 regulates the use of animals in research in the UK and ask for minimum use of animals for research and testing. (Westmoreland, & Holmes, 2009). Still, the laws are not clear and strict enough to prevent animal testing.
Ethical concerns
There is a growing ethical concern regarding the use of animals for research in labs.
There is a growing acceptance of alternative methods that can help replace, reduce or refine the use of animals in labs (Westmoreland, & Holmes, 2009). Animals used for research in labs undergo unavoidable pain and suffering. They fail to flourish in laboratory conditions and may even suffer a premature death (Nuffield bioethics, 2018). It is essential to evaluate how one can end that unnecessary pain and suffering for the animals.
New technologies in place of animal testing
The use of new technologies can perhaps end the fight between human and animal interests. Latest scientific and technological means can be used in place of animals for research and thus help reduce their pain and suffering (Nuffield bioethics, 2018). The growing awareness of the inhuman treatment of animals and the unethical animal testing ways are encouraging the scientific community to look for alternative ways for drug testing. According to Pinsdorf (2017), there are alternative methods that can replace the animal experiments in labs. For example, cell cultures experiments and "test tube" methods, as well as computer simulations, can work as a substitute for the laboratory animals. The researchers can use these applications for their study as the computer modeling can simulate a real-life situation and system
Conclusion
Having discussed the subject of inhuman treatment of animals, one can see different sides to the issue. While animal testing is supported by those who look at it to be indispensable in the area of health and medicine, others disapprove of the pain and suffering caused to these animals in labs. With the growing awareness and sensitivity to the controversial subject, the society is more vocal about the ethical means of using animals in education and research. Critical thinking about the inhumane use of animals in scientific research has raised ethical and social concerns. The technology can play a critical role in this direction and can help eliminate animals testing in labs completely.
