ENGL2611 | Literature | The Importance Of The Person In The Society

This task requires you to develop a discussion paper, made up of three questions, that relates to the topic of one tutorial. You will be allocated a week for your discussion paper by your tutor in your first tutorial. You will need to submit your paper via Turnitin by 5pm the day before your tutorial takes place. For example, if your tutorial takes place on Wednesday, your paper must be submitted by 5pm on Tuesday.

Your paper should consist of three well-developed questions, totalling 500 words. These questions should demonstrate your understanding of the specific literary (or filmic) text set for that week’s discussion and be informed by critical perspectives on that text.

Learning how to pose questions about a literary text is a crucial aspect of becoming a critical reader. In asking you to formulate questions about the literary texts we read this semester, I encourage you to think of them as ‘open texts’ that present readers with a multiplicity of contradictory meanings. The purpose of critical reading is to explore these contradictions. Each reader will ask different questions of, or draw different conclusions from, a literary text. While no interpretation is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, it is important to learn to discriminate between approaches or ideas based on your own understanding of the text. It will be your work to develop an informed reading of each fictional text in conjunction with the critical reading set for the tutorial or chosen independently, and to figure out where you stand in relation to the thoughts and ideas of others. In other words, this assessment requires you to engage with critics and challenge or build on their interpretations.

You may directly refer to the supplementary reading set for the tutorial, but this is not a requirement of the task. Instead, you are encouraged to use the set reading as a starting point for your own research. Just like the other assessment tasks in the unit, you are required to adequately reference the articles and books that you refer to in your discussion paper.

What constitutes a good question? A good question highlights an important or puzzling aspect of a literary text and suggests a meaningful framework in which the issues it raises can be discussed. Here is an example of a successful and unsuccessful discussion question posed in relation to Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Successful Question:

Marilyn Butler, in Jane Austen and the War of Ideas (1975), argues that Austen is a “conservative” writer. Butler finds Pride and Prejudice “baffling” because the reader can’t help sharing in Elizabeth’s rebellious “wit and satiric vision.”1 However, in Pride and Prejudice, there are suggestions that Elizabeth’s seemingly subversive wit is actually grounded in conventional, widely held beliefs. For instance, Elizabeth’s approval of Wickham and disapproval of Darcy agrees with the town’s opinion of the two gentlemen.2 How subversive is Elizabeth’s behaviour in the first half of Pride and Prejudice? Does it problematize or support Butler’s reading of Pride and Prejudice as a “conservative” novel?

  1. Marilyn Butler, Jane Austen and the War of Ideas (Oxford: Oxford University Press), 216.
  2. Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, ed. Robert Irvine (Peterborough: Broadview, 2002), 123, 111.

Unsuccessful Question:

Why does Elizabeth prefer Wickham to Darcy at the beginning of Pride and Prejudice?

Answer:

Isabel Armsrong in her work Politics Pride and Picturesque argues that that the priority of Elizabeth bennet lies in the wants and desires of the leisurely nature rather than the the equality that she seeks as a woman apparently. It is seen that in most cases she chooses Mr Darcy for the person he is but it can be also argued that behaviour

was merely due to the need of the validation from a person of Darcy’s stature (Armstrong 1994). The importance of the person in the society plays a major role in the society in the choice of Elizabeth Bennet. So the question can be posed that how much the great protagonist of the Jane Austen made an unbiased choice? Moreover in her choice she is again bind in the sshakles that exist in the society rather than breaking free from it. Discuss.

Isabel Armsrong in her work Politics Pride and Picturesque it is also shown that the justification of the title is biased as the pride and prejudice is divided between the two genders. Darcy has the pride and Elizabeth Benet has the Prejudiced one in the society. the biased idea of the two genders is one of the major ideas that is presented in the book. The character of Mr Darcy has also been prejudiced while Elizabeth has been prejudiced because of the ego and the pride of her own (Armstrong 1994). The justification of the attributes as the emotional traits of the genders is one of the major parts in the story. So how far is it justified that the emotional traits have been assigned to a certain gender. Will it not be more justified to argue that both the characters had both the emotional responses?

It is stated that this particular novel was written at a time when the repression from the government was fuierce and the charges of sedition was very easily framed by the government on smallest of incidences. Actually sedition was used by the government as a tool to control the citizen of the country. Therefore this novel had deep impacts of the governmental repression and therefore the incidents of John Wilke’s challenge to the authority and the later treason trials during tha later part of the 1790’s were all related to the attitude of the government towards the people. The various revolutionary personalities raised the issues of the government crossing its limits. In a democracy the government must be in its limits in terms of interfering in the life of the common citizens. The novel has various incidents where the revolutionary spirit has been reflected (Armstrong 1994). It is a fact that even the records of the various proceedings of the parliament was kept away from the public. In what ways the novel express and depict the gender roles playing a role in behavior towards the people? Which characters have the traits of being rebellious against the society? To what extent is the novel successful in making people aware about the true spirit of a true love relationship?
