One of the most contentious global issues of our times concerns the resurgence of Russia in world affairs after an interlude following the Cold War when the country was preoccupied with its internal economic and political problems. One manifestation of Russia’s resurgence concerns Russia use of military power to intervene in Crimea and the Ukraine. In this essay, please address the following issues:

Russia’s Perspective on the Ukraine Conflict

The Russian’s perspective on the Ukraine conflict is that the Ukraine conflict should not be an issue to look at with great attentive. Russia sees the conflict as a small matter. Russia believes that Ukraine is not a stable country and that it cannot stand

on its own. It thinks that it is equitable to take over Crimea from the Ukraine. In addition, Russia thinks that there should be no concern by other states because of its objective to ensure that every citizen that is living in Ukraine and is a Russian native has the freedom to speak Russian without opposition from anyone (Giles et al. 2015). Other objectives that Russia wants to instigate are that of Ukraine operating as a country that does not belong to a trade block and also to devolve the powers of the state. Russia has the view that if Ukraine is indeed an independent country, it should be strong in itself. Because the perspectives of the Russians are seen as brutal towards Ukraine, the west countries are not okay with them. The west countries as a way of defending Ukraine have imposed sanctions on Russia. Russia views the western countries sanctions as unreasonable for it believes that it is fighting for the rights of Russian natives in Ukraine (Patrick, 2014). Russia has the views that the West also fights for the same rights to special groups.

US Responses to Ukraine Conflict

The US through the leadership of Barrack Obama has tried to end the Ukraine conflict, but it has not been fruitful. Barrack Obama was not for the idea of providing military arms to Ukraine so that it can be strong to fight Moscow. The US has been unable to fight the Russians strongly, and this is a major fall back. Barrack Obama played the role of deploying more military officers to the NATO, which was a great initiative. In addition, the other initiative of the U S government was the integration of the peace accord that could make Russia restore its initial relations with Ukraine. The US government also responded to the Ukraine conflict through spying on other countries that were believed to be friendly to it (Charap & Shapiro, 2014). Spying was a major mistake that tarnished the strong relationship that the two countries had. Lastly, President Barrack Obama prioritized the Syria's views that called for the US to entertain Russia which slowed down the redemption of Ukraine as a country.

What the US could have done as a response to the Ukraine conflict.

The right response was to do away with the sanctions against Russia so that the crisis between the two countries is not stirred. The sanctions could have only been lifted after Russia agreed to instigate peace in the crisis covered regions. The Minsk II peace accord must be implemented with urgency so that the situation is controlled in time (Mearsheimer, 2014). Negotiations could be carried out with the Russians and the NATO officials to decide on the steps to take that will ensure that peace is maintained. The response could be that which addresses the heart of the main cause of the crisis but not other minor factors that are as a result of the conflict.
