Introduction

In a global village, it would be impossible to conceptualize the impact of culture in a global village without first interacting with the different cultures. In essence, succeeding in a globalized world is dependent on shared efforts from people with different cultural backgrounds equipped with the skills, knowledge, and the will to effectively cooperate with others. In a global society, businesses take part in cross-cultural commercial affairs and lead multicultural teams. As a people, we develop out intercultural capabilities and endeavour to intensify cultural awareness and seek out cultural intelligence. David Livermore (2009) on cultural intelligence, states, that the inward, transformative expedition of cultural intelligence calls for an increased understanding of one’s cultural background. First, one must understand how one is shaped by the culture in which one belongs to. Our cultural background influence the manner in which people think, love, or see things. By understanding our own cultural background is significant as it determines our progress in the expedition of cultural intelligence. Cultural intelligence is defined as the capacity to interrelate confidently and effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds on both a communal and a professional level. For one to be considered to bear the qualities of cultural intelligence one ought to be aware of one’s own culture and cultural differences in the manner that others behave and think (Franja, 2009).


Integration of culture in the current world

As the world continuously shrinks because of globalization, more individuals live and work in foreign countries. Am a perfect example, having being born, raised in India, and currently residing in Australia. Currently I continuously interact with people from much diversified cultural origins manifested by the language used, different beliefs and norms from mine, and we all embrace different lifestyles. Cultural awareness in this scenario becomes a central aspect, as we have to relate with people from diverse culture. The manner in which we see, how we interpret and evaluate things is different (Breslin, Worthley, & Macnab, 2015). What I may consider appropriate in my culture may not be the case in a different culture. Often, misunderstanding in a multicultural environment occur when one uses individual meaning influenced by one’s culture to make sense of another person’s reality. We must therefore first appreciate the fact that we take our culture wherever we go that we get to advance a valid response to cultural variances and the other responses as we encounter them (Taipakle, 2012).

Culture mechanism through which culture perpetuates itself is naturalization. This means we take for granted what we do culturally, given that we have been taught our entire lives that what we do is ‘right,’ ‘normal,’ and not worthy of examination (Earley & Peterson, 2014). Among the key principles in the Sikh religion include sharing earning and to selflessly serve others. Others include making an honest income through honourable means and always being absorbed in meditation and prayer. The temple is always serving free food to people on a daily basis. My mother being very spiritual ensured that I was at the temple when I was a child and was always talking about the various Sikh martyrs. To date I have I am still loyal to the religion and follow the way of the Sikh in a country where the dominant religion is Christianity. Community and cooperation with others are among the most important tenets of Sikhism, whereby we worship and sing God’s praise together, cook and eat together, and serve each other. Some of this appears to be fundamental practices in the society however, Australia things are rather different in as much as cooking, eating, and serving others is concerned. People are individualistic in nature and the communal bond is often absent with phrases such as I rather than we dominating the conversations. When our actions resonates with our cultural cursives (how our culture tells us to act), or fail to acknowledge different culture script, at such instances we are faced with cultural unrest. It is relatively easier to recognize cultural assumptions when relating with a different culture other than our own and as a result our responses would be terming the culture as strange or exotic (Chandrasekar, Dyne, Ang, & Koh, 2013).

Attaining culture awareness of our own cultural dynamics is a relatively tough task as culture is not cognizant to us. From birth, we learnt to see and do things at an unconscious level. Our experiences, our values, and our cultural backgrounds lead us to do things in a certain manner. Based on this, it is essential for us to step outside our cultural boundaries with an aim of assessing the impact one’s cultural background has on one’s behaviour. Success in a culturally diverse society, cultural diversity can be used to create new solutions and alternatives. Continued dialogue among the different cultures helps create new meanings, establish new rules governing engagement dependent on the various situations (Shaffer, Harrison, Gregsen, Black, & Ferzandi, 2012). Cultural awareness requires that we recognize both the positive and the negative aspects of cultural differences. My experience with cultural diversity in Australia and back home has helped me recognize that we are all not identical, both resemblances and differences are all important, different mechanisms can be employed to attain the same goal, and the best approach to a problem is dependent on the cultural contingency. Situations are diverse and they may all require different solutions (Ang, Dyne, Koh, Templer, & Tay, 2010).

Conclusion

My choice in career, friends, and entertainment appear to be greatly influenced by my cultural background. Moreover, in instances where I appear to divert from the norms it may be from influence from friends and a need to belong. However, a personal evaluation of cultural diversity and cultural awareness has led to the conclusion that we as persons respond to situations and to people based on a cultural perspective and its influence on us (Shaffer, Harrison, Gregsen, Black, & Ferzandi, 2012). We therefore judge others based on the assumption that they are wearing our lenses when in reality they are not thus the manner in which they react to the prevailing circumstance is considered as negative or an inappropriate response. We all regard our cultural elements as good and normal. The most important consideration in regards to intercultural interactions is that the dynamics are reciprocal. We need not only to relate from a perspective of self-awareness but also from the perspective that the others also consider our culture as different from theirs (Sternberg & Grigorenko, 2016).
