BHM16 Hospitality Management and Leadership Skills
Answer:
Introduction:
I intend to become an authentic leader in the community who will be offering leadership training to different groups of workers, organizations and companies. This will assist me in promoting leadership skills to a wider region within a short period of time (Piasecki, 2009). I also want to be a family person whose skills and expertise can be extended to the larger part of family members and relatives. Again, I aim at forming a healthy strong family that will use leadership skills to solve issues as well as to pave way forward for personal development and team performance.
I have leadership capabilities that can be of great use in developing the performance in different areas such as companies and business enterprise. These capabilities are based on various roles that are mandated to undertake. These roles are described as follows.
Figurehead role.
The mandate allocated to me as a figurehead leaders include engaging in ceremonial activities in the firm. Again, this role may as well include some tasks such as maintaining peaceful relationships between clients and customers by entertaining them (Richard, 2014). I have a responsibility of seeing off official visitors, represent my organization in external activities and propel gathering outside organization on behalf of the organization.
Spokesperson role.
This role can be executed via four main levels. That is, upper level management, professional colleagues, clients or customers and other categories of company stakeholders such as labour force unions. I have leadership capability of performing this roles for quality performance of the company.
Negotiation capability.
This aim at generating resources to the company. They may include activities such as bargaining for funds, equipment and facilities from supervisors so as to promote execution of objectives, bargaining for workforce so as to meet deadlines and targets, bargaining with suppliers so as to receive materials and other resources in appropriate time and to bargain for compensation and salaries for job candidates (Schwalbe, 2015). This is usually done by recognizing efforts made by workmates.
Team building capabilities
In any organization, it is very important to embrace teamwork. A team will achieve more objectives than an individual. It is important to create a team that will work effectively and efficiently (Wheelen & Hunger, 2007). Team building process involve recognition of team efforts and personal contribution offered by an individual in the team. It also involve identification of activities that can boost team morale and to hold meetings so as to discuss way forward for the team.
Team player skills
Efficient and effective worker in any organization must be a team player. A lot can be achieved if worker join efforts rather than working at individual level (Kotler, 2011). A team player must display some characteristics that demonstrate teamwork. They include appropriate personal conduct, loyalty to management teams and working together with other workers by demonstrating cooperation with other team members
Technical problem solving capabilities.
This role involves identification of problems and provision of solutions. This role is mostly executed by supervisors and managers so as to assist junior staffs in solving problems. Entrepreneurship capabilities.
Large organizations need to innovate ways of increasing net worth and revenue. They need to be sustaining in the long run. Thus, managers need to be entrepreneurs so as to identify business strategies of investment. For instance, I assisted my company in setting new retail stores outside country so as to enlarge market for our products. By selecting entrepreneur as a role, it is possible to create business ideas for the company (Jonasson, 2012). In that case, we relate to an existing company offering products and services. Then, though this role, more gaps are identified so as to generate more revenue. Assuming that my company deals with sales of land, it is possible to generate a corresponding business idea. In that case, the company can start a section of building and construction so as to offers services to clients who buy land (Verboncu & Condurache, 2016). Thus, the client will not bother looking for a constructor since the company manage both tasks simultaneously. Therefore, in case an opportunity arise, the company will be able to earn from the two jointly related activities.
Strategic planning capabilities.
It is important to set sustaining policies, goals, procedures and practices. Managers need to be strategic planners so as to reach resources in external environment (Hubbard, 2016). This role is capable of doing now. For instance, the company can offer products to customers at affordable prices so as to achieve competitive advantage.
Capability to execute strategies.
This role has a perfect positive correlation to strategic planning. This is because executor implement strategies so as to achieve set goals and objectives. This role is capable of doing now. For instance, I allocated funds for construction of retail stores.
Experience.
- I represented my company during annual general meeting held for purposes of reviewing annual performance as a manager of my company.
- As a manager of my company, I communicated to interested clients to apply for tenders so as to facilitate smooth flow of activities in the company.
- As a manager of my company, I bargained for release of funds from our headquarters so as to buy machineries and equipment for manufacturing department.
- I managed to organize a motivational workshop last year so as so train workmates on how to manage time at workplace and how to reduce stress and fatigue after work. This motivated many of the workers.
- I identified that temporarily meetings to review on team performance enabled the company to grow from 12% to 21% within one year.
- For instance, I joined my team members in selling insurance policies to customers and clients.
This involve my traits, motives and characteristics.
- Insight to assist the company to solve technical problems. Three years ago, ABC Pharmaceuticals Company experienced delay of imported medical products due to slow shipment process. As a managing director, i realized that many medical health centers are affected by shortage of medical products. I consulted the shipment company on reasons behind delay. I wrote a report to Shipment Company addressing the priority of the import products on human consumption and medical care(Henry, 2008). The Shipment Company reconsidered their shipment schedule of ABC Pharmaceuticals Company medial products. The shipment was rescheduled and no more delays have been experienced in the last three years.
- Insight in realizing how scenario can result to leadership skills. My action as a managing director of ABC Pharmaceuticals Company was of great impact to the company (Franco, 2015). This action can contribute to leadership development because in my capacity i managed to solve a serious issue. I demonstrated leadership roles such as negotiation and technical problem solving.
- Insight to welcome clients and customers. As a customer care officer, my task was to welcome clients and customers who were searching for our services. I could welcome them warmly. This action made our company to achieve competitive advantage.
- Insight to develop business ideas(Eric, 2012). I assisted my company in setting new retail stores outside country so as to enlarge market for our products.
- Insight to development of the company. I allocated funds for construction of retail stores.
Leadership traits, motives and characteristics that I need to develop.
- Passion for extra tasks. Currently I am not much involved in performing extra duties. I need this trait so as to meet deadline and targets at workplace.
- Ability to reinvest profits(Donald & James, 2005). Currently I save my profits without investment. I need this trait so as to promote my business growth and development.
- Passions towards product diversification (Dow & Taylor, 2015). Currently I deal will a single product in my business. I need this trait so as to innovate other products in the market so as to become a diversified business enterprise.
My Leadership Portfolio.
I can classify my charismatic status as socialized (Dann & Dann, 2007). This is because, most of activities I carried last week tend to converge towards a point of helping team members and other members of the public.
These activities include:
- I requested my work mates to visit a patients in hospitals after work. They all joined me after work.
- I assisted my club at attaining position one during inter-departmental sports competition.
- I welcomed clients to our company with a smile which made them develop positive attitude toward the company.
For the upcoming week, I plan to carry out the following charismatic activities.
- I will add two extra hours at my workplace so as to meet targets within appropriate time.
- I will set a workshop during the week so as to motivate workmates on time management.
- I will train team mates on how to reduce stress and fatigue after work.
Relationship-oriented behavior conducted last week.
- On Monday, I woke up at 4:00 a.m. to revise for continuous assessment test. I really performed.
- On Tuesday morning, I utilized direction setting mechanism. It was perfect.
- On Sunday, I read a motivation book. It fully inspired me.
- On Friday afternoon, I watched a touching movie, it really made me appreciate life.
I read about a young employee who managed to save his company from the effects of a tragedy. In North Korea, a company in central part of the country experienced a tragedy of system collapse. The company lost all crucial data such financial reports, employees’ data, payments made by the company and other sensitive data (Thomas, 2009). This tragedy was as a result of cyber-attack and system hacking. The young employee was having skills in ethical hacking. He managed to recover the data for the company. This saved the company a lot of money. He finally managed to secure the company from any other tragedy in system collapse. In this scenario, I would have used delegating style of leadership to this young worker. He was working day in day out to recover the lost data.
However, this worker needed a job recognition for saving the company. All what he did was not based on the salary he was paid by the company. It was based on his passion toward his skills and capabilities. This is a very strong trait, motive and characteristic of a worker in any working environment.
Second scenario.
This scenario was based on a movie I managed to watch. The scenario was based on a worker of insurance firm who used inside information from the company for his personal gains and interests. Typically, according to company law, this action can be referred as insider trading. It is a criminal offence to engage in insider trading (Ryan & Deci, 2017). The company made loses during that period. Later on the company realized his actions and he was dismissed from the company.
In this scenario, I would be directive in making decision based on the actions of that employee. I would suspend all his pension saving and other benefits he ever made from the company due to insider trading. Decisive actions must be applied in this case so as to limit other workers who would have similar traits.
My Leadership Portfolio.
I have been planning to set up a business enterprise that will be dealing with sales of motor vehicle spare parts. This idea made me conduct deep research on sources I could buy the spare parts for purpose of resale. I visited many companies that deal with sale of motor vehicle spare parts. I requested them to allow me set a retail outlet on their behalf so as to facilitate them in selling. My aim was to gain access to this business and later on deal with my own spare parts that I would import from different countries (Richard, 2013). Many of these companies declined the offer. The few that remained agreed but I realize that the commission they were offering was not sustaining. I was disappointed and decided to discard the idea. However, on my way out from one of the local companies that sell motor vehicle spare parts, I was approached by one of the workers of the company. He said he would supply spare parts under one condition. We were to share the profit equally that would be generated from sales. I was so happy since my business idea was finally in the process of initiation.
At home, I waiting for him to contact me so that we can start the process. I was to become rich from that business activity. Unfortunately, I realized that the supplier was aiming to sneak out spare parts from the company without legal authorization (McGregor, 2012). I was in a dilemma on whether to carry out the business as agreed. If I agreed this offer, definitely I would be involving myself in a criminal offence. I would be handling stolen property. I decided to decline the offer so as to maintain my moral standards.
From that incident I realized that some opportunities may come along with an aim of compromising moral obligation and corrupting my ethical considerations. I prefer to keep my moral standards upright and adhere to codes of ethics and conduct.
My leadership portfolio.
This scenario involve a communication strategy that I presented to a company I worked for three years. The company was dealing with sale of fabric material that were used to make designs and fashion in clothing industry. The company was the main supplier of fabric materials to different sewing industries. These industries were relying completely on fabrics sold to the by the sales company (Maslow, 2013). The company realized that the selling price of fabrics to sewing industries was not sustaining. A lot of costs were used to import fabric material from different countries for purpose of resale and distribution. Shipment was very expensive. Much of the profit was consumed by government due to heavy taxation in custom duty. The other portion was consumed by sewing industry since they were selling final products to customers. The company was in dilemma on whether to close the company or to continue operating at a loss.
As a CEO of the company, I had to make decisions that would enable the company to operate without incurring losses. The idea that I provided saved the company for possible collapse. I realized that if the company trained sewing experts and then form a department to manufacture new designs and fashions, then the company would have diversified the business. Thus, a team of sewing experts was recruited and a sewing department was initiated. That fast sale of manufacture designs and fashions of clothes generated twice of what the company was making from sale of fabrics to sewing industries (Marylene, 2014). The company had to terminate supply of fabrics to other sewing industries. The company concentrated on its own sewing department. A lot of profit was generated. At present, the company has become the main supplier of readymade clothes in the local market.
I realized my skills in diversification and technical problem saving were excellent. A cannot believe I managed to save that company from possible close down. These skills are very important in promoting business growth, business development and solving crises.
My leadership portfolio.
My personal computer in a workplace was infected by malicious virus. This virus destroyed my personal files that were very important to my project. This project was very important in my department. Without this project, the company would have to forego some aspects in development plan. I was much worried on what to report to my supervisors (Kanungo & Manuel, 2014). This scenario may have cost my job. Possibility of being suspended were very high. The company would have accused be of negligence since I was working past deadline. There I was in a dilemma.
Luckily enough, I recalled John who happen to be a classmate of mine at University. He was an expert in computer data recovery. Unfortunately, he is disabled. He is a deaf. I was wondering whether he would manage to recover the project since I would not hear my grievances. When I visited him in his workplace, I wrote down the issue on a piece of paper and left my computer with him. After one day, I went to check the progress of data recovery. To my surprise I found that John managed to recover my destroyed files including the project. He also installed software applications that keep my computer safe up to data. It felt so good.
Despite the fact John cannot hear, he has unique skills and capability that saved my job. We were able to work together as a team to solve that problem (Arnold, 2010). I realized that disability is not inability. There are scenario we find ourselves where we need someone skilled to fix or problems just like John did to me. I am so happy that it worked.
