Produce an individual poster showing the development and final designs of a new building to replace the main Richmond Building Lecture Theatre (RB LT1).

You need to develop a creative design for a new building to replace Richmond Building LT1.  The new building is to be used for academic purposes and should contain at least one lecture theatre, plus whatever other facilities you wish (class rooms, offices, computer rooms, toilets, café etc.).  The building should have 2 to 3 floors and its overall height should not exceed 25m. Its footprint can be extended to cover some or all of the open space currently used for seating and cycle storage.  Due to a water main running directly in front of the main part of Richmond building, the current gap between Richmond Building and the LT1 annex should be maintained.  The existing bridge linking LT1 to the main Richmond Building may be utilised, although other additional links to Richmond Building are possible.

This is a creative design task and as such your final designs should be impressive and include some complex shapes rather than a simple cube shaped building.  You will not be assessed on the structural integrity, economic viability etc.  You will be assessed on how inspiring your design is, how well this is communicated and also on whether you have given any consideration to the sustainability of your design. The poster should be highly graphical and shows every stage of your design from initial ideas, through various design changes to the final structure. To do that, the poster should contain a series of CAD or scanned manual drawings with suitable annotation and explanation.

The poster will be supplemented by a 500 words report explaining the initial designs and their inspirations, the background of your research, how the ideas have been developed and the rationales behind the final structure. The report should clearly state how the new design has brought improvements over the existing structure and space. Points to be considered could include usability, functionality, accessibility, constructability, sustainability, etc.

The poster should be a one-page PowerPoint slide and the report a MS Word document. Both of them can also be submitted as PDF file to reduce the file size. The submission will be made as a 2-part submission via Moodle by the deadline as stated above.
