Sphl2216: Acoustics Analysis Of Speech Assessment Answer
ASSIGNMENT TASK:
TASK:
Goals
By the end of today’s workshop you should know how to:
i. create an annotation tier in Praat
ii. locate acoustic landmarks in a CVC word
iii. identify formant trajectories in a vowel recording
iv. place, edit and delete boundaries and intervals on annotation tiers
v. save and reload audio and TextGrid file pairs for ongoing analysis
Workshop Week 1
Workshops
These classes are designed reinforce and build on the concepts covered in lectures and readings, by providing practical experience in inspection, processing, analysis, and quantification of speech. We will be working with different types of speech data, and learning to use software specially designed for speech analysis. Each week we will build on skills acquired in the previous classes. You should also treat workshops as an opportunity to ask questions about lecture material, and a forum for discussing issues relating to language, speech, phonetics, and acoustics – both theoretical and practical concerns.
Goals
By the end of today’s workshop you should know how to:
i. load, inspect, and export speech files in Praat
ii. navigate a speech recording and audit selected speech intervals
iii. read time and frequency information in a speech recording
iv. control the way that pitch is tracked and displayed
v. control the way that spectrograms are calculated and displayed
vi. zoom in and out of a speech recording to inspect the waveform at different resolutions
vii. identify periodic and aperiodic speech intervals
viii. identify and measure waveform period and amplitude
ix. identify and measure waveform frequency
Software
The software we will be using for speech analysis in workshops and for assignments in this unit is Praat (Boersma & Weenick 1992-). Praat is installed on the lab computers, but you should install it on your own computer and experiment with the software to develop a sufficient level of expertise. Praat is one of the best known and most widely used tools for phonetic and clinical speech analysis, and it is your responsibility to become sufficiently proficient in its use.
Workshop Week 2
Goals
By the end of today’s workshop you should know how to:
i. record speech in Praat
ii. adjust audio settings to optimize speech recording
iii. prepare and use an elicitation list for recording
iv. inspect and audit a speech recording
v. save a speech audio recording
vi. reload a speech audio recording for analysis

Workshop Week 3
Goals
By the end of today’s workshop you should know how to:
i. create an annotation tier in Praat
ii. locate acoustic landmarks in a CVC word
iii. identify formant trajectories in a vowel recording
iv. place, edit and delete boundaries and intervals on annotation tiers
v. save and reload audio and TextGrid file pairs for ongoing analysis
Goals
By the end of today’s workshop you should know how to:
i. identify formants in vowel spectrograms
ii. configure Praat to display narrowband and wideband spectrograms
iii. configure Praat to track formants reliably for different vowels and speakers
iv. identify targets in formant trajectories of different vowel types
v. place, edit and annotate acoustic landmarks on point tiers
Workshop Week 5
Goals
By the end of today’s workshop you should know how to:
i. create a vowel plot showing how vowel qualities differ in formant frequencies F1 vs. F2
ii. configure the major parameters of a vowel plot to control how it is displayed
iii. label and calibrate a vowel plot to conform with standard presentation formats
iv. describe and interpret the distribution of vowel data within an acoustic vowel space
v. compare the acoustic distribution of your own vowels with previously reported data
Workshop Week 6
Goals
By the end of today’s workshop you should know how to:
i. generate and configure spectrograms to analyse English approximant consonants
ii. identify the acoustic characteristics of English approximant consonants
iii. compare the acoustic properties of glides and vowels produced at the same place
iv. recognise the formant transitions characteristic of different approximants
v. describe acoustic differences between approximants produced in different phonetic contexts
vi. compare the acoustic properties of your own approximants with those of other speakers
Workshop Week 7
Goals
By the end of today’s workshop you should know how to:
i. generate and configure spectrograms to analyse English nasals
ii. identify the acoustic characteristics of English nasal consonants
iii. identify the acoustic characteristics of English nasalized vowels
iv. compare the acoustic properties of oral and nasal stops produced at the same place
v. recognise the formant transitions characteristic of different nasal stops
vi. describe acoustic differences between nasals produced in different phonetic contexts
vii. compare the acoustic properties of your own nasals with those of other speakers
