You are required to write a case study formulation of a real criminal case (Ted Bundy) of your choice that has been covered in the media. You will apply your knowledge of psychological theory and research to analyse the causes of the criminal behaviour and their implications for treatment/rehabilitation.
Your Case Study Formulation should contain the following:
o Front Page: the date of submission and word count;
o Introduction: detailing the purpose of your report;
o Background Information: an overall summary of the criminal case which should include factors that are important to the rest of your report, e.g. details about the offender (e.g. personal, educational, work, psychiatric, and offending history);
o Case Formulation: using the 4 P’s model, your case formulation should be in this section and cover all factors; the 4 P’s: Predisposing Factors: factors that can make the individual more vulnerable, e.g. childhood abuse/trauma, poor parenting, family history of mental illness – historic/static factors; b .Precipitating Factors: triggers of the presenting problem that occurred close to the time, e.g. divorce, bereavement, illegal substance use – dynamic factors; c. Perpetuating Factors: factors that maintain the presenting problem, e.g. individual’s personal beliefs, substance abuse – dynamic factors; d. Protective Factors: factors that can offer ‘protection’ from the presenting problem, e.g. family support, education, marriage. The fifth ‘P’ is the ‘presenting problem’ = offending behaviour
o Recommendations: what does this mean for treatment/rehabilitation and recidivism – are they likely to reoffend again?
