ASSESSMENT BRIEF

As a dispensing optician, you will be presented with a range of prescriptions and situations where you will need to give specific advice and dispense appropriate spectacles. 

When dispensing a prescription, there are various factors to consider such as occupation, hobbies, lens availability and legal requirements

Part One

The assessment is in the form of a logbook (maximum 2000 words) which will consist of five prescriptions. You will be given a prescription at individual sessions throughout the module and will have to analyse and explain how you would dispense each of them.

Each account should follow DEPS (Description, Errors, Problems and Solutions) and include advice on frames, lenses and include trade names. Any terminology should be clearly explained and supported with background reading.

You should include a contents page and a header sheet which clearly states your name, group and module title. Marks will be allocated for presentation and references.

The assignment must be word-processed using Arial, font size 12 and double spaced.

Students should submit the assignment through the Turnitin programme which is linked to Moodle. An additional copy should also be handed in to the module tutor by the same deadline.

If you do not submit your assignment by the above date, you must complete an extension form and have it signed by your course tutor. An extension will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and must be accompanied by evidence to support your claim.
 

Part Two

The assessment is in the form of a viva examination which will involve the discussion of one ophthalmic prescription. You will be given a prescription and be expected to analyse and explain how you would dispense it.

The discussion should follow DEPS and include advice on lenses, frames and include trade names. Any terminology should be clearly explained. Marks will be allocated for communication.
