The “Black Rose Publishing” Tender “Black Rose Publishing” is a new independent publishing house that was created to publish modern “noir crime fiction” from emerging writers and to create a professional, encouraging and supportive environment for new authors. “Black Rose Publishing” is dedicated to supporting authors and publishing the best in “noir crime fiction”. We need our Web site, the portal to the company, to reflect this dedication. The successful tender will be the contractor that supplies a design that is simple, attractive, easy to navigate, responsive to the needs of the visitor, and showcases our authors and their work. We require an example site that clearly displays your design, this means that the minimum requirements will be: A welcome page as the entry point to the company’s Web site. This page should be simple but entice the interested browser to look further into the site. It should also contain basic information about the company. From the entrance or welcome page there should be links to the major sections of the example site. These are: A section describing our company. How long it has been in business, where it is located, its corporate philosophy on helping new authors to reach their potential. An author section listing the authors that have signed with us, with a short description describing their writing style: thrillers, detective, stand-alone books, series, &c. There should be at least three authors listed. Each author described should have a link to a single page dedicated to that author. The author page should contain: A photo of the author A brief biography of the author. This should include information on what has had the most influence on their work, such as—other authors, stories, books, genres, art, &c. A minimum of 4 books the author has published. Each book listed should show the book cover and have a synopsis of the story or stories. A report section justifying your design decisions. Why this is a good design, how this design conforms to Web standards, how this design conforms to Accessibility standards. How users will find it easy to navigate on any device. Why we should award the contract to you. The example site must be usable on any sized device (it must be responsive) and each page must print well. That is, the print copy must not include unnecessary images or elements. Assignment Requirements The assignment is your submission for the “Black Rose Publishing” tender and should include: Consistent design on all pages A Company logo, that you have created, which should appear on every page. This should be a PNG image (you may have to read ahead to Chapter 7: Multimedia) Note: The logo is to be your own creation (other images do not). The author section can contain any noir crime authors you are familiar with or they can be created by you. You choose. Simple and clear navigation elements You must use well formed HTML5/XHTML5 markup. Except the table element is not to be used anywhere. There is no data to display so there is not need for this element to appear anywhere on your site. Always use the appropriate HTML element if it exists—do not over-use div and span elements. All links should work. All links should be relative to the document they are in—that is links should NOT contain A machine name, or start with a slash, and the HTML base element should not be used. Your site must work using Google Chrome (or Chromium), as this will be the browser used to mark your submission. Consider HTML5 markup to be similar to any other programming language. As such, pay attention to your coding style, e.g., your markup should: Be simple and straight forward. Be documented, e.g., comments near the top of each document and on major sections of the document. Be aware that XML comments should not appear before the XML tag of XHTML documents as it can upset some parsers. Have meaningful CSS class/id attribute names. Have an appropriate layout, e.g., consistent indentation and use of white space. As HTML5 is mandated, all style changes to HTML elements can only be accomplished using style commands. Do not use style commands needlessly—creating a class name, when an HTML element already exists that could do the task. Effort is expected to be taken with the style of the site via CSS—half a dozen minor changes to text or element backgrounds is not sufficient. Consider CSS code to be similar to any programming language. As such, pay attention to your coding style, e.g., your code should: Be simple and elegant and straight forward. Images and Copyright Apart from the Logo image which you must create yourself, all other images you wish to use on the site may be downloaded from the Internet but must in the Report section, reference and acknowledge the source of each image with a link to the image in question. Copyright violations are an important consideration when creating a Web site, but in this case there are special circumstances: in the context of the tender you are creating an example site only—a site that is not meant for publication, and in the context of the assignment, this is for educational purposes and is not meant for publication. So in these special circumstances images from the Internet are acceptable, but they must be acknowledged. For example, book cover images, if you choose to list actual authors, will be copyrighted and must be acknowledged. A good starting point for “freely available” images are any site or repository that stores images licensed under “creative commons”, for example commons.wikimedia.org If You Encounter Insurmountable Problems If you have problems with aspects of your site, please discuss these problems in the “Report” section. Also discuss your attempts to fix the problem. If you do not discuss what you are unhappy about or failed to get working then the assumption is you are unaware of problems and that will definitely lose marks.
