Globalization Assignment Question

Provide a short, but also comprehensive answer to each of the following questions. Be certain to pay close attention to the wording of the question and answer each part of the question.

Thorough answers will have the best chance of earning full credit. Each question is worth a specific number of points which is indicated below.

1. (20 points) Based on your informed opinion, explain how you see the trajectory of globalization. Is globalization something flowing from West to East? From East to West? Is it entirely connected to the liberal tradition emerging from the Anglo-American world? Or is it something broader, more universal, more human, and gradually more multi-directional and multiple-sourced? Finally, based on your readings and your evolving opinion, do you think that the coming together of the world will be a harmonious process? Or will it be something underlain by ineradicable conflicts?
2. (25 points) Is the emergence of refugee and migrant populations around the world something which we can trace to certain global phenomena? What are some ways in which the concept of core-semi-periphery-periphery (world systems theory), the emergence of the transnational capitalist class, and the radical destabilization of identity and the rise of sectarian differences, are all related to the global dispersion of people? How far do most refugees and migrants travel? What does this say about globalization? Finally, are refugees and migrants different in very important and fundamental ways? Why do you think any distinctions may be blurred in colloquial language?
3. (25 points) How does human gathering-together in cities and tribal arrangements span persist and show itself across different contexts? Are human clusterings always sustainable? Do they happen nonetheless, even when they are not sustainable? Provide three examples from the readings assigned from part 3 of the reader to back up your argument(s). Then, conclude your analysis by comparing your reasoning with the theory of the socio-cultural “big bang” from Dr. Angelbeck’s lecture on January 29th, 2018. Please be creative.
4. (15 points) Summarize one example of a nation-state actively using policy to position itself in the global economy. Provide one example of a transnational corporation adopting a strategy to serve its interests. Are these strategies adopted by actors in the global economy providing stability or instability to global economic affairs? Explain your reasoning for full credit.
5. (15 points) Can globalization be reined in by organized politics? Can policy be used to control exposure to globalization? Or are new actors emerging in the interstices of states?
