Task:

This first essay assignment is designed to give you a taste of the kind of writing you'll be doing in ENG 111 and give me a taste for what kind of writer you are! You will receive full credit for submitting your essay; however, I will also be using the rubric below to assess your "starting point" in this class. Show what you can do! Plan to spend at least 1-2 hours on this assignment this week. Directions: In a brief (1-2 page) essay, please summarize and respond to the article, "The New Literacy," by Clive ThompsonPreview the document. Assume that your reader is a college-level general audience who is not very familiar with the article you are responding to. Begin your essay by summarizing the article Identify the article by title and author. What problem is the author addressing? What argument does he make? What are the author’s supporting claims? After briefly summarizing the article, present your argument in response to it. Do you agree with the author? Do you disagree? Do you agree in part, but not completely? Why? Support your argument using reasons derived from your own experiences and observations

Try to write your essay using conventional grammar and sentence structure. You do not know your audience, so you want the tone of your essay to be professional, not casual. Suggestions for Writing: Read the attached article and annotate it (write questions, comments and other notes about what you are reading). Re-read the article more than once. Plan your response before writing it. Use a writing process that you are comfortable with that can include brainstorming, free writing, listing, outlining, pre-writing, etc. Separate the summary and the response into at least two separate paragraphs.

This essay may have as many paragraphs as you need to make your ideas clear. Make sure each paragraph has “coherence”: a topic sentence, support for the topic sentence and transitions. You are working with the words and ideas of Clive Thompson. Be sure to clearly document and differentiate between his ideas and your own ideas if you quote or paraphrase the article (According to Thompson; Thompson claims, etc.…). Make sure that you reference both the author and the text by name (directly) early in the essay. Use quotation marks when quoting Thompson directly.
