Task One – Discussion of Curriculum Integration

Research and discuss the use of curriculum integration for teaching and learning in a Primary School. Consider the following to steer your research and critical thinking:

⦁ What are the opportunities for English, Mathematics and Science learning when using an integrated approach?

⦁ What are the advantages of using an integrated approach?

⦁ What are the disadvantages of using an integrated approach?

Task Two –  English

Using the scenario chosen for part A and the template provided, identify two pieces of text that could be used to stimulate learning in reading and writing with children working at level 2 of the NZC that connect to your chosen scenario. The ‘texts’ should represent TWO different genre.   One piece of text must be an existing text (provide the text or a link to the resource).  One piece of text must be written by you. 

For EACH piece of text   

·           Name the genre

·           Describe the learning opportunities for children in relation to the texts

·           Make links to academic literature to support your discussion

Task Three –  Mathematics 

Using the scenario chosen for part A and the template provided, write ONE addition and ONE subtraction whole number problem suitable for children working at Stage 5 or 6 of the Numeracy Framework.

Solve EACH problem using two different numeracy strategies – show your mathematical thinking.

Describe THREE misconceptions children may have when solving addition and/or subtraction problems. Identify a teaching tool that could be used to address one of your misconceptions. Justify your choice. Use links to literature to support your discussion.

Task Four  –  ScienceChoose a resource such as a picture book, song, game, dance or drama activity to support the development of scientific understandings / skills in the scenario chosen for Part A for children working at level 2 of the NZC.

Using the template provided and the following questions to guide your discussion.

-          How does the chosen resource / approach support the development of the scientific understandings / skills in your chosen topic?

-          What questions would you ask to support the science learning while using this resource and why?

-          What would you expect children to say or do to demonstrate they understand the scientific concepts evident in your chosen topic? How would you assess what they have learnt?
