On October 25th, 2019, the offenders SG and MJ, who had been heavily drinking all day, were ejected from a pub in the evening. The offenders resisted aggressively and tried to force their way back into the pub without success. The licensee of the pub later told the police that SG and MJ had been a “nightmare” from the moment they had stepped inside the pub. “They were troublemakers who were on more than alcohol,” he stated. At around 9:30pm, while SG and MJ were standing outside the pub, a middle-aged man walked past and asked them for a lighter. The offenders immediately became aggressive towards him. Feeling in fear for his life, the man turned and ran away. The offenders gave chase. The man ran towards the rear of the pub, but he then tripped. As he attempted to get back to his feet, MJ put him back to the ground. Both MJ and SG punched him in the back of his head and kicked him around ten times to the head and all over his body, as he lay on the ground. The victim lost consciousness. After walking away, SG and MJ returned on at least three occasions and administered more kicks, whilst the man was still prone on the ground. Ultimately, both offenders made their way off. The court itself saw the CC footage of the attack, which showed a sustained assault by the offenders on the victim. The overall incident seemed to have lasted approximately five minutes. The victim bled heavily. He suffered a lost tooth, fractured his eye socket and nose, and sustained cuts and significant bruises. Both offenders were arrested and examined. They had fresh marks and lacerations on their knuckles. Forensic tests subsequently taken revealed traces of the victim’s blood on MJ’s shoes.
