1) Develop your own week-by-week programme for construction of the Railway bridge from the first part of the 2018-19 project, assigning realistic durations for each activity. (10%)

2) Write an explanation (1-2 pages) in support of your programme outlining the detailed operations required, equipment needed, likely numbers of personnel. This should explain why the durations on the programme are sensible. (15%)

3) Sketch and label an outline design for the formwork and falsework needed in order to concrete the cross beam on the central pier of Shelford Road bridge. Include notes of materials used. (10%)

4) Write a description (1-2 pages) of the risks of work on a linear construction site such as a road and the precautions that need to be taken to maintain safety. Include basic personal protection as well as site operation. (15%)

5) Write a short discussion (1-2 pages) on the relative merits of different types of bridge construction for:

a) A single-span 25m highway bridge over, for example, a railway.

b) A single-span 100m highway bridge over a valley + river.

c) A multi-span 500m highway bridge at an elevation of up to 30m above the ground You can present your discussion either in 3 parts or combined. (20%)

6) Carry out a design for one section of a multi-span cable-stayed bridge carrying a 4-lane highway, as in the figure below. Specifically you should:

a) Suggest a sensible deck cross-section, with approximate dimensions + a few sentences giving your reasons;

b) Estimate the total weight of the deck + traffic using the road;

c) Propose an arrangement of cables (can be more or less than those shown);

d) Calculate the force in each cable and propose cable thicknesses;

e) Calculate the compressive force in each part of the deck;

f) Considering the overall weight, propose sensible materials and thicknesses for the tower.
