Not marked Note: This task must be submitted electronically via Turnitin The assessment task for this module consist of a 3500 (+-10%) critical literature review. The review must to be submitted on TURNITIN and should reflect the individual effort of the student. The task accounts for the full 100% of the mark for the entire module. The primary focus of the task is to explore key debates, differences in opinion, approaches and findings from published work in selected themes within Organisational Behaviour (OB) and Human Resource Management (HRM). The articles to be reviewed must be those that were published in highly- ranked 3* and 4* academic journals within the ABS rankings as recommended below. The task: ? Present a critical literature review of 3500 words on one of the themes or topics studied in the weekly lectures. You are restricted to include only articles from the recommended journals recommended below published in the last five years 2014- 2019. ? All articles must be on the same theme or topic and should address themes topic studied within the module and ultimately relating to OB/HRM. ? Your critically review should evaluate the key issues, debates, theories, findings and methodological approaches adopted by the authors in ABS-ranked journals as identified below. You are advised to stay within the recommended list as these are all credible journals. ? You must only choose articles from the10 journals provided below that were published between 2014 and 2019. Google Scholar Seek advice from a library staff should you face difficulty in finding these journals and the articles you wish to consider. Main task: 3500 word essay. You are required to identify articles from the 10 selected academic journals above as sufficient for a 3500 word essay. You will then present a critically literature review in which you examine keys issues, debates, research, theories highlighted in the selected articles. In your analysis, you should aim to compare and contrast between content in the publications. In doing so, you will be required to identify the different perspectives, positions and main arguments of the articles. In the process, you will consider highlighting similarities and differences in the arguments developed, evaluate the value and contribution of the articles as well as examine the suitability of the theories, research methods, and sources of reference included by the author(s). Other aspects of the critical review should include the currency of issues/sources considered, depth/scope of exploration clarity, etc. Further, examine wider limitations, strengths, weaknesses, contribution, implication for theory and practice etc. etc. Expectation General ? Use key terms to search electronic databases for the right journals. ? Select the right articles from one topic from the recommended journals. ? Examine the key debates from slides and reading from other articles and books. ? Limit yourself to 10 articles that will form the basis of the actual review Expectation: specific ? Avoid summarising each of the articles and presenting as a composite review. Rather the review should consistently interweave debates, issues and compare different viewpoints, research findings, methods, content etc. ? The review should engage with the key themes/issues underpinning the topic of focus. ? Review should examine the topic as a whole, considering strengths, limitations and unexplored possibilities that could contribute new knowledge. ? Review should note, methodological/philosophical approaches and their implication for the adopted perspectives and points of view. Expectation: Academic discipline ? Your review must be structured into specific sections/parts/sub-headings. ? Each section will constitute subsections which all focus on a particular issue. ? Avoid rumbling and babbling. What the markers will be looking for Your essay will be marked in consideration of the following: 1. Reading: The depth of your reading (number, range and quality of sources). You are expected to have read most of the sources listed for the question that you choose. 2) Objectivity: Your ability to develop and sustain an objective and balanced argument/discussion. 3) Support: The extent to which your argument/discussion is supported using relevant material (theory and references) from your reading. You cannot rely on personal opinion or making unsupported statements. 4) Critical: The level of critical analysis in your writing – you cannot rely on simply description. Being critical means, considering, evaluating, weighing, questioning different perspectives, theories, claims, findings etc. etc. 5) Communication: Your ability to express yourself clearly in English using appropriate terminology, correctly spelling and grammar. 6. Structure: Your ability to develop a clear, logical structure for your essay which addresses the question and guides the reader. 7. Referencing: The extent to which your essay is correctly referenced using the Harvard system of referencing. GENERAL ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE • A focused and well thought out piece of work that shows insight and answers the question will get a higher mark. Marks will be deducted however for waffle, repetition, padding and irrelevance. It is quality not quantity that is important. • It is not enough for you to put forward points in your essay that are essentially “correct”. You must support those points using appropriately referenced material derived from your reading and cited in your text and added onto your reference list. • It is not acceptable to use lecture notes and lecture hand-outs as a reference source for example, do not use references such as: according to the lecture slides of (Eyong, 2018), it says that team work is good/bad. The slides are intended as a guide only and you must do your own additional reading. • If your assignment contains only material that has simply been paraphrased from lecture notes, and a limited number of sources, it will be given no more than a fail of 40%. • Using only the citation or abstract of an article is not acceptable, and you should not ‘cut and paste’ from on-line or hard copy sources. • I will discuss assignment ideas and arguments with you weekly so please ask questions during these sessions and debates. When assessing your performance using the marking grid, do not speculate. Rather, look at the expectation and be objective. If you do this well and in good time, you might wish to review your work and make it better/stronger. Try and produce an essay plan before writing and seek guidance all the time from your teacher, friends or other academics. • Your critical review should have a coherent, incrementally developing and logical structure that would normally follow the simple model of introduction, main body and a conclusion. • You can use sub-headings but if you are able to communicate well using connecting paragraphs, then you don’t need sub-headings. Planning Sections of your essay The Introduction At the introduction, you need to “set the scene” for what is to follow and the introduction is a key element in the essay. As marker, I do not know what is coming and you need to lead me through your argument(s). In this paragraph you could: • Identify what the task is and say how you intend to address the question • Indicate what the key issues to be developed are in relation to the question • You can use a quote that sums up the main ideas you will discuss • Explain the structure or the roadmap that says how many sections or parts and what each will cover. In this section you need to define clearly the key concepts used. However, you should not put forward only a single definition. The selection of two or three definitions is better, and you should choose definitions so that they illustrate different aspects of the concept. Here you might also highlight any definition issues. For example, is there agreement in the literature on how the concept can be defined? Can the concept be defined? Don’t simply list your chosen definitions as you also need to comment on them. If the question has asked you to argue either for or against a statement, you also need to identify which side you are arguing for. The Main Body This should be the longest part of your assignment and should contain the key points that you are aiming to develop Example: in leadership there are issues about universality and contextual/cultural differences/resonance, mainstream and emergent theories, qualitative and quantitative approaches, masculinity and feminism, individual and collective, leadership as focused at top of organization and distributed leadership, etc. etc.. These main debates are found in each of the other themes or topic areas. Make sure that you spend equal time discussing different angles of an argument. The Conclusion The conclusion is very important, yet many students neglect it, often finishing their essay in a single sentence. In the conclusion you should reiterate and highlight the key points, perhaps emphasising what you think are the most important points. If you have been asked to discuss an issue it is here you should identify on which side of the debate you stand. You should not however introduce new material in the conclusion. It is important you check back with the introduction to ensure that you do not contradict yourself, and that you have done what you said you would do in the introduction. In this respect, perhaps the way to begin is to remind the reader what the task was. Exit on a high by suggesting a new approach, identifying an area for future studies and a reflection of what you have learnt whilst completing the task, the good, the bad and the ugly and how you would do things differently if you were to repeat the task. Reassessment The failed coursework will have to be retaken and submitted within one month of the release of results. The lecturer will inform candidates retaking the assessment of the exact date and time for submission. This will also be communicated by the admin office. Note however that if you fail to achieve a passing grade of at least 50%. Your mark will be capped at a maximum of 50%. The articles to be analysed at the retake will not be same as those originally examined. Assessment Regulations Normal MSc/MA regulations apply. The assignment has a marking rubric by which all grades will be allocated. This is available in the group assignment guidance section of Blackboard and is attached below. As indicated below, please use this marking grid to assess your own performance and attach this as another appendix. Throughout the module you will develop an understanding of the main debates, issues, critique, contribution and some sources of reference. The expectation is that you will benefit from this knowledge and your previous studies to satisfactorily complete the assessment. You are warned to avoid all forms of malpractice including plagiarism, copying and pasting previous work or including large portions of books, articles and other sources as part of your work without observing approved rules on assignment tasks at DMU such as not citing correctly. Note that you may be disqualified from the programme if you are found to have engaged in any form of academic malpractice after due process.
