Summative Assessments
The summative assessments are the major activities designed to assess your skills, knowledge, and performance, as required to show competency in this unit. These activities should be completed after finishing the Learner Guide. You should complete these as stated below and as instructed by your trainer/assessor.
Skills, knowledge, and performance may be termed as:
- Skills – skill requirements, required skills, essential skills, foundation skills
- Knowledge – knowledge requirements, required knowledge, essential knowledge, knowledge evidence
- Performance – evidence requirements, critical aspects of assessment, performance evidence.
Section A: Skills Activity
The Skills Activity is designed to be a series of demonstrative tasks that should be assessed by observation (by the assessor or third party, depending on the circumstances). In some cases, skills will be demonstrated in writing, where the criteria fit.
It will demonstrate all of the skills required for this unit of competency – your assessor will provide further instructions to you, if necessary.
Section B: Knowledge Activity (Q & A)
The Knowledge Activity is designed to be a verbal questionnaire where the assessor asks you a series of questions to confirm your competency for all of the required knowledge in the unit of competency.
Section C: Performance Activity
The Performance Activity is designed to be a practical activity performed either in the workplace or a simulated environment. You should demonstrate the required practical tasks for the unit of competency and be observed by the assessor and/or the third party, as applicable to the situation. If the third party is required to observe you, you will need to make the required arrangements with them.
If necessary for the activities, you should attach completed written answers, portfolios, or any evidence of competency to this workbook.
Section A: Skills Activity
Objective: To provide you with an opportunity to show you have the required skills for this unit.
This activity will enable you to demonstrate the following skills:
- Learning:
- consolidates and improves own knowledge and skills by coaching, mentoring, or training others
- Reading:
- gathers interpret and analyses texts in organizational documents to facilitate performance management
- Writing:
- plans and prepares documents for allocating work and managing performance suitable for the target audience and in accordance with organizational requirements
- Oral Communication:
- uses language and structure appropriate to context and audience to explain expected standards of performance, provide feedback, and coach staff
- Self-management:
- applies legal and regulatory responsibilities related to own work and the organization as a whole
- adheres to organizational policies and procedures
- Teamwork
- applies the protocols governing what to communicate to whom and how in a range of work contexts
- collaborates with others to achieve joint outcomes, influencing the direction and taking a leadership role on occasion
- Planning and organizing:
- sequences and schedules complex activities monitors implementation and manages relevant communication
- seeks advice, feedback, and support, as required to assist in the decision-making process
- uses experiences to reflect on the ways in which variables impact performance.

Equipment needed:
- Performance management information, legislation, and documentation
- Risk management plan
- Space for consultation and reviews.
This activity will require observation. Your assessor has a checklist of criteria to base your assessment on.
1. You must consult with two individuals about work to be allocated. Within the consultation, you must:
- Discuss the work to be allocated
- Determine availability and interest
- Identify available resources.
You must make notes of the information and attach them to the workbook.
2. Refer to Case Study A – Work plan
This activity follows on from Question 1.
Using the information you gathered in Question 1, develop a work plan for each individual and allocate work according to the business operational plan.
Your work plans must include:
- Performance objectives
- Task descriptions
- Resources
- Expected results
You must attach the completed plans to the workbook.
3. This activity will require observation. Your assessor has a checklist of criteria to base your assessment on.
Refer to Case Study B – Performance standards and key performance indicators
This activity follows on from Question 2.
You must discuss and develop performance standards and key performance indicators with each individual.
During the discussion, you must:
- Establish what performance will be measured
- Decide how performance will be measured
- Complete the document in Case Study B
- Confirm the document by obtaining signatures.
Attach the completed documents to the workbook.
4. This activity follows on from Question 2.
Refer to Case Study C – Risk register
A risk analysis of the work plans developed in Question 2 must be carried out using the document in Case Study C.
Each risk register must include:A description of any risks
- The potential impact of the risks
- The level of risk
- The level of impact
- Any action that can be taken
- Relevant legislation.
The risk registers must be checked against the risk management plan to identify any legislation that is relevant to the work plans. This must be recorded in the risk register.
The completed risk analysis must be attached to the workbook.
5. You must undertake a review of the current performance management system and processes
Write a 1-page report of your findings.
Your report must include:
- Whether the performance management system is easy to use
- If it is consistent throughout the business
- Whether it complies with any relevant policies
- Whether it complies with any relevant legislation.
Attach your report to your workbook.
6. This activity will require observation. Your assessor has a checklist of criteria to base your assessment on.
This activity follows on from Question 5.
You must hold a 15-20 minute training session for the two individuals on the performance management and review process that you reviewed in Question 5.
The training must include:
- An overview of the system
- The role of the individual
- A demonstration on how to complete any documentation.
7. This activity follows on from Questions 5 and 6.
You must conduct performance management according to the processes you reviewed in Question 5 and provided training on in Question 6.
You must write a short diary to document the processes that were undertaken.
The diary must include:
- The performance management undertaken
- The steps that were taken
- Any outcomes
- Copies of any notes or documentation.
The completed diary must be attached to the workbook.
8. You must monitor and evaluate the performance of each individual. Write a short 1-2 page report to document the monitoring and evaluating processes you used.
Your report must include:
- How performance was monitored
- Whether performance standards are being met
- Whether key performance indicators are being achieved.
Attach your report to the workbook.
Section C: Performance Activity
Objective: To provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate the required performance elements for this unit.
This activity will enable you to demonstrate the following performance evidence:
- Manage performance of at least two individuals
- Manage performance of at least one team.
In the course of the above, the candidate must:
- Consult with stakeholders to identify work requirements, performance standards, and agreed on performance indicators
- Develop work plans and allocate work to achieve outcomes efficiently and within organizational and legal requirements
- Assess performance against performance indicators according to performance management and review processes
- Monitor, evaluate and provide feedback on performance and provide coaching or training, as needed
- Keep records and documentation in accordance with the organizational performance management system
- Reinforce excellence in performance through recognition and continuous feedback
- Respond to underperforming individuals according to organizational policies, as required.

- Discuss the work to be allocated
- Determine availability and interest
- Identify available resources
- Develop performance standards
- Develop key performance indicators.
Make notes on the key points from the discussions and attach them to the workbook.

This activity follows on from Question 1.
Using the information you gathered in Question 1, develop work plans for the stakeholders and allocate work according to the business operational plan.
You must:
- Complete the workplace
- Allocate the work
- Document the performance standards
- Document the key performance indicators.
You must attach the completed plans to the workbook.
3. This activity will require observation. Your assessor has a list of criteria to base your assessment on.
Complete stakeholder performance reviews to assess current performance, according to the organizational review process. Within the reviews, you must:
- Discuss current performance
- Determine whether performance meets expectations
- Discuss any additional support or training requirements.
4. This activity will require observation. Your assessor has a list of criteria to base your assessment on.
You must monitor the performance of the stakeholders.
As part of the monitoring, you must:
- Identify performance to provide informal feedback on
- Provide coaching to improve performance
- Demonstrate recognition of good performance.
5. You must respond to underperforming staff members according to the organizational policies. The process you follow must be documented in a diary to include:
- The underperformance identified
- Options available to improve performance
- The chosen method of dealing with the underperformance
- The steps are taken to improve performance.
