Aim of the Assessment – This assessment asks students to develop a beginning understanding of what life is like for people who experience mental illness with particular reference to the profile and burden of the a mental illness and the contribution nurses and midwives make to the person using the Recovery framework. – The student also has the opportunity to research a current Australian service that seeks to improve care and reduce the impact of the mental illness. – The student will also have the opportunity to develop their oral communication skills which is an essential skill for nurses and midiwives involved in mental healthcare. – This assessment is designed to enable students to practice and develop their presentation skills. Task Each student is required to choose a topic from the list below and follow the instructions to produce a Pre-Recorded Presentation (10 mins) using no more than five [5] PowerPoint slides. The URL of the video will be submitted on a pre-developed template (found under the Video Assessment tab on vUWS). Presentation Topics Each Student is required to choose one topic form the list below: – Experiencing suicidal thoughts – Living with Major Depression Once you have chosen a topic, each 10-minute presentation will include the following: – A clear introduction to the aim of the presentation. – A statement about the incidence of the mental health issue you are focussing on in Australia. – An overview of the challenges that a person living with this condition may face - this will provide background information about how the person may present to services, the symptoms they may complain of and how these symptoms affect their daily life. – A description of relevant Recovery focussed nursing interventions to assess the needs of the person and assist the person and their family to understand the condition and develop effective strategies to support the person’s recovery. – An outline one current Australian service initiative designed to improve care and reduce the impact of this health condition.
